Georgetown, Guyana – September 19, 2024 – To address climate resilience and guide Guyana’s efforts in mitigating flood risks, bolstering food security, and enhancing water resource management for years to come, the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) and the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA) of Guyana formed a partnership today.  Key stakeholders were also brought together for a dynamic strategic planning workshop, setting the stage for a sustainable and resilient future for Guyana’s drainage and irrigation infrastructure.

This pivotal workshop is part of the project towards “Developing a Strategic Sustainable Integrated National Drainage and Irrigation System,” funded by the Climate and Disaster Resilience Initiative (CDRI) and the Infrastructure Resilience and Innovation in Systems (IRIS) grant.

The workshop focused on introducing nature-based solutions, enhancing institutional capacities, and integrating a gender equality and social inclusion (GESI) lens to ensure the future sustainability of Guyana’s drainage and irrigation infrastructure. Strengthening institutional capacities will lead to more efficient infrastructure management and maintenance, potentially reducing costs. Additionally, incorporating a GESI perspective ensures that the benefits of improved infrastructure are equitably distributed, empowering women and marginalized communities.

Attended by key stakeholders from various sectors, the event provided a platform for meaningful discussions and engagement, helping to identify priorities and concrete entry points for a more resilient and integrated approach to water management.

Participants strengthened their institutional capacities by focusing on planning processes that incorporate sustainability and innovative designs. The workshop also emphasized the importance of nature-based solutions in tackling climate change challenges, especially in water resource management. Stakeholders engaged in discussions to share priorities and concerns, promoting a more inclusive and collaborative approach to sustainable drainage and irrigation in Guyana.

Mr. Lionel Wordsworth, CEO of NDIA, expressed his satisfaction with the event, adding:

“This workshop has been invaluable in bringing together critical voices from various sectors. The collaboration with GGGI is key to ensuring that we are equipped with the necessary strategies and solutions to build a drainage and irrigation system that not only supports Guyana’s agriculture and livelihoods but also enhances resilience against climate change. This initiative will directly benefit the communities at risk, ensuring their safety and sustainable development.”

Mr. Daniel Munoz Smith, Caribbean Representative, GGGI, praised the collaborative effort, stating:

“The exchange of ideas and expertise between GGGI, NDIA, and other key stakeholders has set the stage for a more sustainable future in Guyana’s water management sector. Together, we are laying the groundwork for a strategic plan that integrates climate resilience, sustainability, and social inclusion.”

The outcomes of the workshop will now feed into the final stages of developing the national strategic plan, with a strong focus on sustainability, resilience, and inclusivity. This plan is expected to guide Guyana’s efforts in mitigating flood risks, bolstering food security, and enhancing water resource management for years to come.
