Tokyo, Japan, September 3, 2026 — The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) announces the official launch of the 2026 China-Japan-Korea (CJK) Workshop Series, an international collaborative initiative delivered in collaboration with UNESCAP, designed to foster green growth, enhance knowledge sharing, and drive sustainable development across East Asia and the Global South.
As nations face intensifying climate challenges, trilateral cooperation between China, Japan, and Korea, in close partnership with developing economies, is more critical than ever. Organized under the overarching theme of “Catalyzing Regional Climate Resilience and Innovative Financing Partnerships,” this strategic series bridges innovative and actionable policy recommendations, serving as a practical catalyst for advancing carbon market mechanisms and accelerating cooperation among participating nations.
Mr. Jack Bathe, who leads the initiative at GGGI, spoke on how the workshops contribute to the long-term development of carbon markets in Asia:
“These workshops help Asian policymakers align domestic compliance markets with common practices, ensuring future interoperability by answering what neighbors are doing, how to mutualize support, and what pathways achieve desired outcomes.”
The 2026 CJK Workshop Series builds upon the UNESCAP-GGGI-ISETS workshop successfully held in Beijing, China on August 23, continuing across key regional hubs: the Japan workshop on September 4, the Korea workshop on September 7, the Philippines session on September 18, the Indonesia session on September 22, and the Thailand workshop on September 24.
These country dialogues form a core component of the China, Japan, Korea (CJK) and Southeast Asia Carbon Market Collaboration initiative, a joint undertaking by GGGI and UNESCAP, supported by the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF). By leveraging CJK expertise, the initiative supports emissions trading systems (ETS) and carbon markets across East and Southeast Asia. As ASEAN economies, including Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Viet Nam advance carbon pricing to meet their NDC targets and align with evolving international climate regulations, the initiative delivers practical policy insights and bridges compliance with voluntary markets.
Through structured expert exchanges, these country sessions convene government, industry leaders, and subject matter experts to validate policy papers, evaluate measures at system and sector levels, and forge actionable pathways to scale high-integrity carbon markets across the region. Building on this momentum, GGGI continues to lead global dialogues on market-based climate solutions. The discussions on carbon finance will feature prominently at GGGI’s flagship Global Green Growth Week and its pre-event Global Article 6 Forum in October, and at COP31 in November, as we continue driving global cooperation to advance carbon markets that support sustainable development worldwide.
