GGGI Lao Team held an introductory meeting on NDC Revision Process

August 27, 2019, Vientiane, Lao PDR – The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) Lao PDR team in partnership with the Department of Climate Change of Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment held an introductory meeting on Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) Revision Process for Lao PDR’s reporting commitments under the UNFCCC and Paris Agreement.

The meeting was attended by various government ministries such as Natural Resources and Environment, Agriculture and Forestry, Public Works and Transport, Energy and Mines, Industry and Commerce, and Health. The objectives of the half-day workshop were to present the NDC revision process and update progress on mitigation and adaption activities from relevant sectors related to NDC. Moreover, questionnaires were presented and distributed for active discussion and interaction among key stakeholders. These questionnaires will be used to further discuss with relevant stakeholders to assess NDC readiness and priority areas.

GGGI plans to continue to support the Department of Climate Change over the next several months in strengthening the structure of information collection processes in preparation for its reporting requirements on Nationally Determined Contribution. According to Dr. Jason Lee, Country Representative of GGGI Lao PDR, the NDC revision process is very important for Lao PDR because these newly updated revisions to the NDC are going to affect the development path for Lao PDR in a green and sustainable direction to achieve Sustainable Development Goals under the concept of green growth.

Participants were informed of the overall process of updating NDC and were engaged in preliminary discussions of their current work related to the targets set in the current NDC and in identifying linkages between NDC and SDGs. The next steps include a series of bilateral meetings with relevant stakeholders to discuss in more detail their engagement in the mitigation and adaptation situations in Lao PDR. This will give an overview of current NDC coverage for further streamlined development in achieving its contributions, goals, and visions.
