Seoul, Republic of Korea, October 21, 2019 –The Global Green Growth Week 2019 (GGGW2019) has officially kicked off today in Seoul, Republic of Korea. GGGW2019, the 3rd instance of the Global Green Growth Institute’s (GGGI) flagship conference, is being held in conjunction with the Korea Renewable Energy Conference (KIREC) and in partnership with the Green Growth Knowledge Partnership (GGKP), the American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM), REN21, LG Chemical, the Incheon Global Campus, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Republic of Korea.
Under the banner of Unlocking Renewable Energy Potential, GGGW2019 runs October 21-24 and welcomes decision-makers and with high-level speakers from around the world to contribute in a number of feature events.
The 7th Green Growth Knowledge Platform Annual Conference (GGKP7) on Achieving Global Energy Transformation, headlines GGGW 2019 from October 21-22 and will explore the latest knowledge on the policy, finance, technological, and social dimensions of achieving green energy transformation around the world, as well as the important role of cities and industries. GGKP7 aims to advance global thought leadership, discussion, and debate on green energy transformation, and to present key strategies and innovations to promote and accelerate the scale-up of renewable energy and related measures.
“For developing countries, in particular, the green energy transformation can play the role of a bridge to modernization, economic growth, and greater social inclusiveness,” noted Mr. Ban Ki-moon, GGGI’s Assembly President and Council Chair, and 8th Secretary-General of the United Nations, in his recorded address opening the GGKP7 conference.
On October 22, GGGI will host the Inclusive Renewable Energy Transition and Generation of Jobs session to share and discuss the employment effects of the low carbon energy transition in low & middle-income countries.
“The position that renewable energy is more expensive than fossil fuels is no longer credible, with many of our Member countries discovering that renewables are not only the more environmentally conscious alternative but the cheaper option as well,” said Dr. Frank Rijsberman, GGGI’s Director-General. “Renewable energy is a win-win for countries and businesses by providing an attractive investment opportunity for the private sector and creating green jobs – all while helping to lower air pollution and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.”
The third day of GGGW2019 will feature the launch GGGI’s new Green Growth Index. The Index was designed to track and assess green growth performance worldwide based on efficient and sustainable resource use, natural capital protection, green economic opportunities, and social inclusion.
“More than 900 people from over 40 countries are expected to attend this year’s Global Green Growth Week,” said Hyoeun Jenny Kim, Deputy Director-General and Head of Green Growth Planning and Implementation. “We’re looking forward to hearing diverse perspectives from experts in the field of renewable energy and green growth.”
