GEORGETOWN, Guyana, August 19, 2026 – The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) has officially joined the Global Biodiversity Alliance (GBA), an initiative led by Guyana aimed at advancing biodiversity conservation and sustainable development by strengthening coordination, raising awareness, mobilizing resources, and accelerating collective action.

On Wednesday, August 19, 2026, Dr. Mallé Fofana, GGGI’s Deputy Executive Director and Head of the Green Growth Implementation Directorate, joined Dr. Pradeepa Bholanauth, Guyana’s Senior Director for Climate Change and REDD+, to formally sign GGGI’s membership to the Global Biodiversity Alliance in Georgetown. Dr. Mallé and Daniel Muñoz-Smith, GGGI’s Caribbean Representative, are currently visiting Guyana to reinforce GGGI’s partnership with the country and advance collaboration on green growth, climate action, and biodiversity conservation.

“We warmly welcome the Global Green Growth Institute as a member of the Global Biodiversity Alliance,” Dr. Bholanauth said. She added, “GGGI’s expertise in green growth, climate finance, and sustainable investment will be a valuable contribution to the Alliance’s efforts to mobilize action and resources for biodiversity conservation. Partnerships such as these underscore the vital role of international cooperation in advancing sustainable development while safeguarding nature for future generations.”

The membership aligns GGGI with the Georgetown Declaration adopted during the GBA Summit convened last July 2025 in Guyana. Designed as an open and non-binding platform for voluntary action by diverse actors, the Alliance strengthens efforts under the Convention on Biological Diversity and supports implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. By raising global awareness of the biodiversity crisis and its links to climate change, the Alliance increases ambition to address biodiversity loss and expands access to financing options that support targeted responses.

GGGI’s membership reflects the strong alignment between the Alliance’s objectives and GGGI’s Strategy 2030 priorities. These include integrated climate action, biodiversity conservation, sustainable economic development, enhanced monitoring, reporting and verification systems, and mobilization of green and nature-positive finance. It also builds on the collaboration with the Government of Guyana in support of the country’s Low Carbon Development Strategy 2030, climate resilience priorities, and efforts to protect and sustainably manage ecosystems.

Dr Mallé emphasized the importance of this new alliance, stating that “Biodiversity is fundamental to climate resilience, sustainable livelihoods, and long-term economic transformation. Through this Alliance, GGGI is committed to deploying technical expertise, policy advisory support, and innovative financing solutions to support countries in strengthening their responses to biodiversity loss and advance nature-positive development.”

The Georgetown Declaration highlights biodiversity as fundamental to human well-being, climate stability and resilience, food and water security, public health, and the long-term sustainability of ecosystems. It calls for urgent, coordinated, transformative, and ambitious global action grounded in science, while stressing the need for adequate, predictable, and accessible financing to support developing countries in achieving biodiversity goals.

As a member of the GBA, GGGI joins a global network of countries, multilateral organizations, private sector actors, Indigenous Peoples and local communities, academia, civil society, think tanks, and other partners dedicated to positioning biodiversity as a strategic global priority.  GGGI will continue to support collective efforts to strengthen biodiversity policy, mobilize sustainable finance, and scale practical solutions that protect, restore, and sustainably use ecosystems while supporting inclusive green growth.
