September 29, 2025

Seoul, Republic of Korea, September 26, 2025 – The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) hosted the Second ASEAN-Korea Cooperation on Methane Mitigation (AKCMM) Regional Workshop, titled Expert Workshop on Advancing Methane Emissions Estimation and Mitigation Strategies, from September 24 to 26.

AKCMM is a three-year, USD 20 million program funded by the ASEAN-Korea Cooperation Fund (AKCF). The program aims to strengthen institutional, technical, and financial foundations for methane mitigation across ASEAN Member States and to support concrete reduction activities. A key focus is enhancing ASEAN-Republic of Korea cooperation, particularly through technology-based climate solutions that drive innovation and economic growth.

The workshop brought together 45 participants, including government representatives from ASEAN countries, international organizations, and experts in agriculture, livestock, and waste management.

During the opening session, congratulatory remarks were delivered by Mr. Ha Daegoog, Director of the ASEAN Cooperation Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea, Dr. Vong Sok, Head of Environment Division at the ASEAN Secretariat, and Mr. Hakseok Ryu, Director of Department of Partnership, Governance and Communications at GGGI. They emphasized methane reduction as both critical for achieving climate goals and an opportunity to grow strong regional startups and other businesses specializing in technology-based climate solutions.

Over the three days, participants presented the current status of methane emissions in their respective countries, exchanged best practices, and discussed pathways for advancing regional collaboration. A key highlight was the in-depth discussion on the draft report, tentatively titled ASEAN Methane Reduction Roadmap: Assessment of Potential Pathways, one of the flagship outputs of AKCMM. Participants also engaged in sessions on methane scenario modeling methodologies to deepen their understanding of mitigation options.

The workshop also featured site visits to the Jungnang Wastewater Recovery Facility, the Seoul Sewerage Science Museum, YESCO, and Seoul Energy Dream Center (Noeul Park). These visits provided valuable insights into the full cycle of methane management—from wastewater treatment and recovery to utilization as biogas—and showcased best practices in turning former landfill sites into urban green spaces for the public.

This workshop served as an important platform to strengthen ASEAN’s capacity to reduce methane emissions and is expected to contribute to accelerating climate action across the region.
