GGGI Engages at Stockholm+50

On June 2 and 3rd 2022, world leaders, international community, policy makers and civil society will meet in Stockholm, Sweden, to commemorate the 50 year anniversary of the UN Conference on the Human Environment. Half a decade with the environment at the core of sustainable development, the world is facing its worst sustainability challenge and multiple planetary crisis with climate change, loss of biodiversity and natural habitats, mounting waste and air pollution. Anchored in the Decade of Action, under the theme “Stockholm+50: a healthy planet for the prosperity of all – our responsibility, our opportunity” the high level meeting will generate shared recommendations for how to accelerate solutions for sustainable development.

Supporting the Least Development Countries Engagement at Stockholm+50

Mandated by the Government of Sweden, GGGI, in partnership with the International Center for Climate Change and Development (ICCCAD) and their Director Dr. Saleemul Huq, has developed a strategy for engagement of Least Developed Countries in Stockholm+50 processes. The UNFCCC LDC Chair, Madeleine Diouf Sarr of Senegal, is leading the efforts to bring in LDC perspectives primarily from the transversal perspective of climate change into the Leadership Dialogues of Stockholm+50. Being the least to blame but most impacted by the planetary crisis, LDCs must be seated at the table as solutions and paths forward are discussed.

Apart from making her interventions during the Plenary and in the Leadership Dialogues, Diouff Sarr will be speaking and in dialogue with former UNFCCC Chair and GGGI Climate Diplomacy Lead, Gebru Jember Endalew, and ICCCAD Director Dr. Huq at the Stockholm+50 Action Hub on June 3rd at 12.15-13.15 CET. And, she will deliver a keynote speech as the official S+50 Side Event on Gender Just Recovery on June 3rd, 17.15 CET (register here to attend the latter virtually).

Promoting Gender Just Recovery and Transitions as Co-Chair of the GGKP Gender Expert Group

As a founding member and co-Chair of the Green Growth Knowledge Platform (GGKP) Gender Exert Group, GGGI’s Head of Climate Action and Inclusive Development, Ingvild Solvang, will be moderating an official S+50 Side Event on “A healthy planet through Gender Just Recovery, Friday June 3rd, 17.15 CET (register here to attend the latter virtually).

The Gender Expert Group includes members from leading green growth institutions and have worked to develop a framework for Gender Just Transitions with focus on the energy transition and financial mechanisms. UNWOMEN’s Director for Program, Policy and Intergovernmental Division, Sarah Hendriks, will present the Feminist Framework for Just Recovery, with UNPAGE Head of Secretariat, Asad Naqvi, will share perspectives on accelerators of Gender Just Transitions. UNFCCC LDC Chair will provide an LDC perspective on the importance of gender equality in climate action in light of the UNFCCC Gender Action Plan. This will be followed by a panel discussion with Sheila Oparaocha, Director of ENERGIA, Bhavna Choudhary, Founder and Principal Coordinator of the Indegenous, and Dr. Pem Narayan Kandel, Secretary at Nepal’s Ministry of Forestry and Environment.
