Washington, D.C., United States, April 25, 2025- The Global Green Growth Institute’s (GGGI) Director-General, Mr. Sang-Hyup Kim, traveled to Washington, D.C., to participate in the 2025 World Bank Group (WBG) and International Monetary Fund (IMF) Spring Meetings. The meetings are taking place from April 21 to 26, bringing together central banks, finance and development ministers, private sector leaders, civil society representatives, and international development partners to address the pressing global economic and development challenges, including climate change and sustainable growth.

In addition to attending the WBG and IMF Spring meetings, Director-General Kim held meetings with key stakeholders to strengthen partnerships and explore new areas for collaboration with GGGI. With green digital transformation now one of GGGI’s key strategic priorities, Director-General Kim engaged with Mr. Sangbu Kim, Vice President for Digital Transformation at the WBG. Together, they explored potential opportunities to collaborate in green digital innovation, including sustainable AI for climate action and the greening of digital infrastructure. GGGI recently joined the Coalition for Sustainable AI at the AI Action Summit in Paris, strengthening its commitment to support its Member States and Partners through sustainable AI solutions for climate and green growth, such as AI-assisted MRV.

Director-General Kim also met with Ms. Kate Hampton, CEO of the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF),and GGGI’s recently appointed Council Expert/Non-State Actor Member. Kate joins GGGI’s Council alongside distinguished figures such as H.E. Ban Ki-moon, the eighth Secretary-General of the United Nations; and H.E. James Fletcher, Chairman of the Executive Board of the Caribbean Centre for Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency (CCREEE), and H.E. Yeonchul Yoo, Executive Director of the UN Global Compact Network Korea. DG Kim and Ms. Kate Hampton discussed her new role in GGGI governance organs, and explored collaboration between CIFF and GGGI, to scale up impact and drive transformative changes to GGGI’s Member States and Partners.

In addition, Director-General Kim signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the World Resources Institute (WRI) President, Mr. Ani Dasgupta. Through the MoU, GGGI and WRI agreed to advance collaboration on evidence-based research, joint programming, thought leadership, and technological innovation to accelerate the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Climate Agreement.

Lastly, he will meet with Mr. Hiroshi Matano, Executive Vice President at the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA), part of the WBG, to explore the role of insurance mechanisms for investments in Article 6 international mitigation projects. 

Director-General Kim’s visit to Washington built on and reinforced GGGI’s strategic partnerships and leadership in delivering green growth solutions with a focus on catalyzing green and climate finance, fostering innovation, to enable impact across its Member States and Partners.

김상협 GGGI 사무총장, 2025년 세계은행·IMF 춘계회의 참석 – 전략적 파트너십 강화 및 녹색전환 논의

미국 워싱턴 D.C., 2025년 4월 25일 – 글로벌녹색성장기구(GGGI) 김상협 사무총장이 미국 워싱턴 D.C.에서 개최되는 2025년 국제통화기금(IMF)·세계은행(WB) 춘계 연차총회에 참석했다. 이번 총회는 전 세계 중앙은행 총재, 재무·개발부 장관, 민간 부문 리더, 시민사회, 국제개발협력 기관 등 다양한 이해관계자들이 기후변화 및 지속가능한 성장과 같은 주요 글로벌 과제를 논의하는 자리다.

GGGI는 이번 총회에서 주요 기관과의 전략적 파트너쉽을 더욱 강화하고, 녹색 전환을 위한 새로운 협력 기회를 모색했다. 김 사무총장은 세계은행의 디지털 전환 담당 김상부 부총재와 면담했다. 양측은 지속가능한 인공지능(AI)을 활용한 기후변화 대응, 친환경 디지털 인프라 구축 등 녹색 디지털 혁신 분야에서의 협력 방안을 논의했다. GGGI는 최근 ‘녹색 디지털 전환’을 전략적 중점 과제로 설정하고, 파리에서 개최된 ‘AI 정상회의(AI Action Summit)’에서 ‘지속가능한 AI 연합(Coalition for Sustainable AI)’에 가입하여, AI 기반 MRV(모니터링·보고·검증) 시스템 등 기술 중심 솔루션을 통해 회원국 지원을 본격화할  계획임을 밝힌 바 있다.

또한, 김 사무총장은 어린이투자기금재단(CIFF)의 대표이자 최근 GGGI 이사회 비국가행위자 구성원으로 합류한  케이트 햄프턴(Kate Hampton)대표와도 회동했다. 햄프턴 대표는 반기문 제8대 유엔 사무총장, 제임스 플레처 카리브재생에너지에너지효율센터(CCREEE) 이사회 의장, 유연철 유엔글로벌콤팩트 한국협회 사무총장 등과 함께 GGGI의 주요 거버넌스 기구에서 활동하며 의사결정에 참여하게 된다. 이번 만남에서는, 그녀의 새로운  역할을 비롯해 GGGI와 CIFF 간의 공동 프로젝트 확대를 통한 회원국 지원 강화 방안을 논의했다.

추가로, 김상협 사무총장은 아니 다스굽타(Ani Dasgupta) 세계자원연구소(WRI) 소장과 양해각서(MoU)를 체결했다. 이번 양해각서를 통해 GGGI와 WRI는 지속가능발전목표(2030 Agenda)와 파리기후변화협약 이행을 가속화하기 위해 근거 기반의 연구, 공동 프로그램 개발, 지식 리더십 강화, 기술 혁신 분야에서 협력을 확대하기로 합의했다.

마지막으로 김 사무총장은 세계은행 그룹(WBG) 산하 다자간투자보증기구(MIGA)의 히로시 마타노(Hiroshi Matano) 수석부총재와 면담을 가질 예정이며, Article 6 국제 감축사업에 대한 투자 유치를 위한 보험 메커니즘의 역할을 모색할 계획이다.

이번 워싱턴 방문은 GGGI가 전 세계 회원국 및 파트너와 함께 추진 중인 녹색성장 전략의 글로벌 확산 방안을 모색하고, 기후금융 활성화와 기술 기반 혁신 촉진을 통해 지속 가능한 전환을 가속화하기 위한 중요한 계기가 될 것으로 기대된다.
