Brussels, Belgium, June 12, 2025- The Director-General of the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), Mr. Sang-Hyup Kim participated in the meeting of the Global Commission on People-Centered Clean Energy Transitions: Designing for Fairness, hosted by the International Energy Agency (IEA).

The Global Commission convenes a diverse group of government ministers, business leaders, trade union and civil society representatives and other key stakeholders to discuss how fairness can be fully integrated into clean energy policies.

During the discussion, Members of the Commission shared strategies on achieving net-zero targets while ensuring energy security and social inclusion, and comments and words of appreciation on the newly released Blueprint for Action on Just and Inclusive Energy Transitions, prepared with contributions of Commission Members, including GGGI’s.

In his remarks, Director-General Kim emphasized the importance of the Just Energy Transition for GGGI Member States, and the need for reskilling and upskilling opportunities for workers impacted by the transition, promoting equitable access to green jobs, and aligning education and training systems with labor market demands. GGGI has proactively supported the assessment of just energy transition policies, conducting training programs in countries including Indonesia, Jordan, the Philippines, the United Arab Emirates, and Viet Nam.

“The net-zero energy transition and energy security are crucial goals for GGGI Member States to achieve their sustainable development priorities. They require bold ambition and climate and development finance, but finance alone is not enough. We must ensure no one is left behind in this transition,” said Director-General Kim. “GGGI stands ready to support green employment and green skill potential assessments and policies to sustain high-quality green jobs in the energy sector,” he added.

Director-General Kim also outlined GGGI’s strategic priorities in advancing people-centered energy transitions: Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence, Clean Hydrogen, and Carbon Markets. He introduced GGGI’s Hydrogen to Green Growth (H2G) Initiative, which aims to bring both public and private stakeholders to shape a global hydrogen agenda and support Member States in creating enabling environments for clean hydrogen deployment through technical assistance, knowledge sharing, and resource mobilization.

On the sides of the meeting, DG Kim held bilateral meetings with key stakeholders, including Dr. Fatih Birol, Executive Director of the International Energy Agency. Both shared their appreciation of the ongoing cooperation between GGGI and the IEA and exchanged on future perspectives for further strengthening it in the future.

Director-General Kim has served as a member of the IEA Global Commission since 2024 and joined this session for the first time in his capacity as GGGI’s Director-General. His participation reaffirmed GGGI’s commitment to supporting its Members and Partners in developing inclusive, equitable, and future-ready energy transition strategies that deliver climate, economic, and social benefits altogether.
