GGGI completes development of MRV Roadmap in the Marshall Islands

The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), as an implementation partner of the Regional Pacific NDC Hub has successfully supported the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) to develop a roadmap to strengthen the measuring, reporting and verification (MRV) system for greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in-country. This roadmap is aimed at strengthening Marshall Island’s capacity and act as a guide towards the future development of its MRV system.

Led by the NDC Hub, this technical support was delivered through close collaboration between GGGI and the National Energy Office (NEO), Ministry of Environment and the NDC Hub focal point in RMI, Director for NEO, Ms. Angeline Heine, and her team.

MRV systems are an important element of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Paris Agreement. It helps countries to report their GHG inventories in a transparent manner, to track their national mitigation targets. MRV systems also enable countries to meet their respective reporting requirements as set up under the Paris Agreement.

Deputy Director, RMI Ministry of Environment National Energy Office, Mr. Benjamin Wakefield said this was a positive step forward and that “the technical assistance will support RMI’s current effort in building MRV of GHG emissions and the initial tasks led by NEO”.

GGGI’s Senior Officer, MRV and NDC Enhancement, Dr Noim Uddin added that the activity structures the groundwork for RMI to enable it to further work and develop its national MRV system in the future.

“When parties track the progress of their national mitigation efforts, they are better equipped to achieve the mitigation contribution set out in their NDCs,” he said.

During the implementation of the technical assistance, key sectoral and line ministries were consulted via questionnaires and one-to-one meetings under close coordination of NEO. The existing MRV systems for GHG inventories and reporting were reviewed, which formed the basis of establishing the comprehensive MRV systems of these sectors.

A sector focused and tailor made MRV of GHG emissions training was also delivered as part of the capacity building and streamlining GHG information collection and respective sector-based MRV requirements.

The completion of this activity marks the second MRV activity completed by GGGI as an implementation partner of the NDC Hub. This achievement has been made possible with the support of GGGI’s Climate Action and Inclusive Development (CAID) division.
