Kingston, Jamaica – March 11, 2024 – As part of its partnership with the European Commission, within the framework of the Global Green Bonds Initiative (GGBI) under the Global Gateway, the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) supported the capacity-building workshop on green bond issuance processes in collaboration with the Jamaica Stock Exchange.

The workshop was delivered as part of a collaboration agreement with the Luxembourg Stock Exchange through the LGX Academy that specializes on delivering sustainable finance training.

This training covered each step of the green bond issuance process, including key international standards and principles, the role of green taxonomies, the importance of preparing for external reviews, reporting on the use of funds, and the benefits of issuing green bonds.

During the opening remarks, Hon. Matthew Samuda, the Jamaican Minister of Economic Growth and Job Creation, mention that: “This workshop is a call to action on increased green and sustainable investments in a small island developing state that feels the effects of climate change on a regular basis.”

The European Commission Ambassador to Jamaica, Belize and Bahamas, H.E. Erja Askola also said that: “As part of the European Commission, we promote the development of the green bond market and the mobilization of additional sources of financing for sustainable investments. That’s why, through the Global Green Bonds Initiative (GGBI), we are committed to helping this market emerge in emerging economies and ensuring that those issuing bonds for the first time have the necessary tools.”

The workshop included a presentation by Mr. Randall Hooker, Sustainable Finance Officer from GGGI. Mr. Hooker added: “At GGGI, we have experience in green bond issuance processes in other Caribbean states, such as the issuance of the Dominican Republic’s Sovereign Green Bond in 2024, as well as the preparations for Saint Lucia’s blue bond issuance in 2025.” He also emphasized that: “The role of the EC, through GGBI, in providing technical assistance through GGGI, is a key element in the success of these transactions.”

Initiatives like this, which align with GGGI’s mission to adhere to the sustainable development gaps in emerging economies, the financial sector will continue to strengthen its capacity in sustainable finance. The aim is to further enhance the knowledge of existing and viable financial instruments to promote the transition towards green growth, all thanks to partnerships like the one with the European Commission.
