Seoul, Republic of Korea, March 8, 2026 – On International Women’s Day (IWD), the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) reaffirms its commitment to the theme, “Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls.” As climate change disproportionately affects vulnerable populations, GGGI is spearheading gender-transformative solutions across its member countries to ensure that the green transition is both sustainable and inclusive.

In the past year, GGGI has achieved significant milestones in integrating Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) into national climate strategies and local green businesses:

  • India: Through the Narmada Landscape Restoration Project, GGGI has empowered local women as key stewards of ecosystem restoration, linking sustainable land management with improved livelihoods.
  • Jordan & Nepal: GGGI successfully concluded green skills training programs, equipping over 1,500 graduates in Jordan, 60% of whom were women and refugees, with market-ready skills. In Nepal, climate-smart agriculture initiatives have created over 1,300 new jobs specifically for women and returned migrant workers.
  • Indonesia & Cambodia: The Weaving Change initiative in Indonesia is transforming the textile industry by empowering female artisans through circular economy practices. Similarly, the Switch Garment project in Cambodia has improved environmental performance while safeguarding the interests of the female-dominant garment workforce.
  • Uzbekistan & Mexico: In the Aral Sea region, GGGI provided microgreens management training and equipment specifically for women with disabilities, fostering economic independence. In Mexico, the Electric Motors, Passionate Hearts initiative has integrated gender perspectives into sustainable transport and finance, with women making up 50% of participants.
  • Burkina Faso: GGGI provided technical leadership to ensure that Burkina Faso’s NDC 3.0 is a people-centered climate strategy, embedding GESI as a core pillar for national climate ambition.

In Africa, women are not merely the face of climate vulnerability; they are the architects of diverse, scalable solutions. Standing at the heart of their communities, they drive cooperatives that build climate-resilient agriculture and lead community-based forest conservation,” saidMs. Katerina Syngellakis, GGGI’s Regional Director of Africa. “By empowering women and girls, we are doing more than restoring landscapes—we are redefining the continent’s economic future through inclusive leadership.

As the world marks IWD 2026, GGGI remains dedicated to breaking structural barriers and fostering a world where green growth and gender justice go hand in hand.
