Seoul, Republic of Korea, August 4, 2026 – The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) and the United Nations Office for Sustainable Development (UNOSD) officially commenced the <2026 SDGs Youth Summer Camp> today at the GGGI headquarters in Seoul. Running from August 4 to 6, the three-day program centers on the theme ‘Youth Capacity Development for Climate Action: Understanding Carbon Markets and SDG 13’.

Bringing together rising young leaders from 16 countries around the globe, the camp is designed to build comprehensive, practical knowledge of compliance carbon mechanisms (CCMs), high-integrity voluntary carbon market, and Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.

In the opening ceremony, Executive Director of GGGI, Mr. Sang-hyup Kim said, “I feel a deep sense of responsibility and apology for the climate challenges the younger generation has to inherit. However, if we act and unite across borders, we can shape the future we deserve. I truly hope our young leaders will grow to become pioneers of global climate action.”

He also stressed the importance of equipping youth with the expertise needed to champion transparent, equitable and accountable carbon market governance.

In his video message, H.E. Ban Ki-moon, President and Chair of the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) and the 8^th Secretary-General of the United Nations, emphasized the critical role of youth as powerful agents of change in driving global climate ambition, stating, “The challenge is not simply to recognize the problem; it is to move from awareness to action, from promises to implementation.”

Following his address, Mr. Chun Kyoo Park, Head of UNOSD, welcomed participants and highlighted a decade of impactful youth capacity development since 2017. Further, he emphasized UN’s commitment to youth capacity development and to supporting implementation of the 2030 Agenda.

The interactive program features expert-led lectures from international organizations and academia, daily-life emission tracking, structured debates on carbon market integrity, case studies on climate justice, and hands-on group challenges. Participants will collaborate in teams to evaluate fictional carbon credit projects, assessing baselines, additionality, and social impacts, and pitch innovative policy-advocacy concepts to a panel of international organization experts on the final day.

Co-organized by UNOSD and GGGI in collaboration with the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment of the Republic of Korea and K-eco, the summer camp aims to foster meaningful networking and enhance youth leadership in global climate governance.

GGGI-UNOSD, 미래 기후리더 육성을 위한 ‘2026 SDGs 청년 여름캠프‘ 개최

▪탄소시장과 파리협정 제6조 및 SDG 13(기후 행동)에 초점을 둔 역량 강화 프로그램

▪전 세계 16개국에서 선발된 우수한 청년 리더들이 서울 GGGI 본부로 집결

서울, 대한민국, 2026 년 8월 4일 – 글로벌녹색성장기구(사무총장 김상협, 이하 “GGGI”)와 유엔 지속가능발전사무소(UNOSD)가 오늘 GGGI 서울본부에서 <2026 SDGs 청년 여름 캠프(2026 SDGs Youth Summer Camp)>를 공식 개막했다.

• 8월 4일부터 6일까지 사흘간 진행되는 이번 프로그램의 주제는 ‘기후 행동을 위한 청년 역량 강화: 탄소시장과 SDG 13의 이해’로, 전 세계 16개국의 역량 있는 청년 리더들이 한자리에 모였다. 참가자들은 이번 캠프를 통해 규제 탄소시장과 고품질 자발적 탄소시장, 파리협정 제6조와 관련한 전문 지식을 깊이 있게 배우게 된다.

김상협 GGGI 사무총장은 개회식에서 “기후 위기 속에서 미래 세대가 짊어져야 할 부담에 대해 깊은 책임감과 미안함을 느낀다”며, “하지만 국경을 초월해 함께 연대하고 행동한다면 우리가 마땅히 누려야 할 지속 가능한 미래를 만들어갈 수 있다”고 말했다. 이어 “청년 리더들이 글로벌 기후 행동의 주역으로 성장하기를 진심으로 응원한다”고 당부하며, 쳥년들이 투명하고 공정하며 책임감 있는 탄소시장 거버넌스를 이끌어갈 전문성을 갖추도록 지원하는 것 역시 중요하다고 덧붙였다.

반기문 GGGI 의장(제8대 UN 사무총장)은 개회 영상 축사를 통해 글로벌 기후 행동을 이끄는 강력한 변화의 주체로서 청년의 결정적인 역할을 강조하며, “우리의 과제는 단순히 문제를 인식하는 데 그치는 것이 아니라, 인식을 넘어 행동으로, 약속을 넘어 실천으로 나아가는 것”이라고 강조했다.

이어 박천규 UNOSD 원장은 참가자들을 환영하며, 2017 이후 지난 10여 년간 이어온 청년 역량 강화의 의미 있는 성과를 조명했다. 아울러 청년 역량 강화와 2030 지속가능개발목표(SDGs) 이행을 지원하겠다는 UN의 확고한 의지를 거듭 강조했다.

이번 참여형 프로그램은 ▲국제기구 및 학계 전문가 강연 ▲일상생활 탄소 배출량 추적 ▲탄소시장 무결성(Integrity) 심층 토론 ▲기후 정의 사례 연구 ▲실천형 그룹 과제 등으로 구성된다. 참가자들은 팀 프로젝트를 통해 가상의 탄소 배출권 사업을 평가하고 기준 시나리오 및 추가성, 사회적 파급 효과를 분석한다. 행사 마지막 날(6일)에는 국제기구 전문가 심사위원단 앞에서 혁신적인 기후 정책 제안을 직접 발표할 계획이다.

대한민국 기후에너지환경부와 한국환경공단(K-eco)이 협력하고 UNOSD와 GGGI가 공동 주관하는 이번 여름 캠프는 글로벌 기후 거버넌스 내 청년 리더십을 강화하고 의미 있는 네트워크를 구축하는 데 기여할 것으로 기대된다.
