Suva, Fiji, May 01, 2024 –The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) and the University of the South Pacific (USP) signed a Grant Funding Agreement (USD 80,000) to develop and establish a curriculum on Greenhouse Gas Inventory (GHGI) and Measurement, Reporting and Verification (MRV) of the GHGI under the Fiji’s Government Capacity Building Initiative for Transparency (CBIT) Project funded by the Global Environmental Facility (GEF).

The curriculum will mark the first-ever course curriculum in Fiji and in the Pacific region specifically designed to enhance knowledge and skills in climate change reporting. It represents a fundamental change in Fiji’s approach to meeting its global climate commitments and Enhanced Transparency Framework (ETF) of the Paris Agreement. The developed curriculum will be offered to relevant ministries and stakeholders involved in gathering data on Fiji’s GHGI and its efforts in monitoring, reporting and verifying climate actions and support needed.

Anchored within the country’s tertiary education system through USP, the curriculum is expected to foster sustainable capacity development. It is envisioned to empower not only government line ministries, but to data providers in the private sector and to academia and students alike ensuring that capacities and knowledge remain in the national institutions.

“This curriculum development aims to lay ground for the highest standards of professional practice in GHG accounting and reporting ensuring that policy responses to climate change are effective, credible and transparent in Fiji,” Gerard O’Donoghue, GGGI’s Assistant Director-General, remarked at the signing ceremony.

USP will develop a curriculum for a short course covering MRV of mitigation actions and GHG inventory preparation. Additionally, a funding strategy will be prepared to sustain these courses beyond the project period.  The curriculum will integrate gender guiding framework for ETF with a subsequent series of training sessions for trainers to effectively deliver the course content.
