Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, 07 May 2026 — In a significant step toward advancing sustainable development and climate finance in Papua New Guinea, the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have formalized their collaboration through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) under the Government of Australia funded Climate FIRST project.
The partnership establishes a framework for strengthened cooperation to mobilize climate finance, support institutional capacity, and accelerate the implementation of green growth initiatives across Papua New Guinea.
With climate change posing increasing risks to livelihoods, infrastructure, and economic stability, the MoU reflects a shared commitment to supporting national and sub-national efforts in building a resilient, low-carbon future. The collaboration will focus on strengthening institutions such as the Climate Change and Development Authority (CCDA), advancing climate finance readiness, and developing a pipeline of bankable green and climate projects.
Through this partnership, GGGI and UNDP will work together to:
- Strengthen institutional capacity for climate finance coordination and delivery
- Develop and advance climate and green growth projects
- Mobilize sustainable public and private investment
- Enhance knowledge sharing and south-south cooperation
- Support green growth planning and implementation at all levels
UNDP Resident Representative in Papua New Guinea, Nicholas Booth, emphasized the importance of collaborative action in addressing development challenges:
“Partnerships are essential to unlocking innovative financing and delivering sustainable development outcomes. Through this collaboration with GGGI, we are strengthening our collective ability to support Papua New Guinea in achieving its climate and development priorities.”
Country Representative for GGGI PNG, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu, Mr. Muhammad Ali Shaikh, highlighted the significance of aligning climate finance with national priorities.
“Mobilizing climate finance at scale requires strong institutions, credible project pipelines, and coordinated partnerships. This MoU with UNDP reflects our shared vision to translate climate ambition into actionable investment opportunities that deliver tangible benefits for communities across Papua New Guinea.”
By combining technical expertise, global experience, and in-country presence, GGGI and UNDP are reinforcing their commitment to delivering impactful, coordinated solutions that support sustainable development and climate resilience in Papua New Guinea.
