On November 27, GGGI Uzbekistan and the Ministry of Economy and Finance of Republic of Uzbekistan signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the Joint Implementation of the Project “Bridging the Gaps of Climate Finance in Central Asia.”

The “Bridging the gaps of climate finance in Central Asia” is focused on unlocking green investment opportunities in Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan by accelerating the green transition of their financial sectors. With the support of the Ministry of Economy and Finance of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the project is implemented by GGGI under the Small Grants and Climate Innovation Facility (SGCIF), which is funded by UK International Development. SGCIF is a part of the regional programme “Climate Risk Management in Central Asia”, implemented by GIZ on behalf of the German Government.

The purpose of this Memorandum is to establish a framework of cooperation and to facilitate collaboration between the parties in the field of transition to green economy and facilitation of green economic growth and sustainable development under the project.

The Memorandum was signed by Mr. Umid Abidhadjayev, Deputy Minister of Economy and Finance of the Republic of Uzbekistan and Ms. Stella Seung-yeon Lee, GGGI Uzbekistan Country Representative, at the International Forum on “Green and Affordable Housing.”

Under this MoU, GGGI and the Ministry will assess gaps in the climate finance ecosystem in the region and make recommendations to address those gaps in Uzbekistan. Primarily, they will collaborate to enhance access to climate finance of relevant public and private entities through capacity building and technical assistance for the design of green finance frameworks of selected banks and institutions in Uzbekistan.

GGGI is dedicated to the promotion of economic growth in developing countries in both environmentally sustainable and socially inclusive ways. GGGI’s objectives are in line with Uzbekistan’s strategy on green economic transition, while the Ministry of Economy and Finance is one of the key stakeholders in the matter.

We believe this cooperation will bring value to Uzbekistan and its population, as well as the region, ensuring successful implementation of the “Bridging the gaps of climate finance in Central Asia” project.
