Amman, Jordan, November 26, 2024 – The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) and Al Hussein Technical University (HTU) announce the official launch of the Green Skills Training Program, an innovative initiative designed to equip Jordan’s workforce with essential technical skills for a green economy. The program, funded by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and implemented by GGGI and HTU, will focus on vocational training for three critical sectors: photovoltaic solar energy, hybrid and electric vehicle (HEV/EV), and energy efficiency and heat pump systems.

The launch event, held at HTU’s premises in Amman, was attended by prominent figures including H.E. Muawieh Radaideh, Jordan’s Minister of Environment; H.E. Kim Pilwoo, the Korean Ambassador to Jordan; Ms. Kim So Young, KOICA Country Director; and Ms. Krystle Cooper, GGGI Jordan Deputy Country Representative. The event highlighted the growing partnership between Jordan and Korea in advancing green skills development to support Jordan’s national green growth agenda.

In his remarks, H.E. Muawieh Radaideh, Minister of Environment, emphasized, “This program is a significant step towards strengthening Jordan’s green economy and creating green job opportunities, particularly for vulnerable populations. By fostering technical expertise in key sectors, we are ensuring that our workforce is prepared to meet the challenges of the future.”

Korean Ambassador Mr. Kim Pilwoo stated that “This program is especially meaningful because it is closely aligned with key pillars of Jordan’s Economic Modernisation Vision: a green Jordan and a smart Jordan.” While mentioning Korea’s own experience of having transformed from a war-torn country into one of the world’s leading economies by investing in education, he reiterated the Korean government’s unwavering commitment to supporting Jordan’s sustainable development, particularly in the fields of education and vocational training.

The Green Skills Training Program will begin its first training cohort in early 2025, training 450 participants over the following year, providing 240 training hours with a curriculum that combines theoretical learning with practical, field-based experience and offer certification from nationally and internationally accredited bodies, enhancing the employability of trainees in the green economy. Job placement support will also be provided to facilitate successful employment outcomes for graduates. Additionally, the program focuses on advancing an inclusive green economy in Jordan, with training targeting the inclusion of women, refugees, and youth from economically disadvantaged communities in Amman, Irbid, Mafraq, and Zarqa. Participants will benefit from tailored training and job placement support, ensuring that the program not only enhances technical skills but also promotes social inclusion and economic resilience.

This initiative is part of GGGI’s ongoing efforts with KOICA to promote green jobs and sustainable livelihoods in Jordan, as well as to support the country’s green transition and economic diversification.
