Seoul, Republic of Korea, 10 September 2026 – The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) hosted senior government delegations from the Kyrgyz Republic and Republic of Uzbekistan during their visit to the Republic of Korea as part of the ongoing project, ‘Strengthening Climate Resilience through Introduction of Innovative Smart Techniques in Flood and Drought Management in Central Asia (2024–2027)’, supported by the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment of the Republic of Korea.

The visit began with a Knowledge-Sharing Workshop at GGGI Headquarters in Seoul on 7 September, bringing together government representatives, Korean technical institutions, and experts to exchange experience on flood and drought management, early warning systems, smart water infrastructure, and climate-resilient technologies.

From 9 to 11 September, the delegation is visiting key Korean water management and flood response facilities, including the Korea Rural Community Corporation (KRC) Anseong Office, Geumgwang Reservoir, and the Han River Flood Control Office. Through these visits, the delegation will learn from Korea’s experience and technologies in flood management, early warning and monitoring systems, and water resources operation. In particular, on 10 September, the delegation attends Korea International Water Week (KIWW 2026) in Daegu to explore the latest water management technologies and international cooperation trends, while also strengthening exchanges with relevant Korean institutions and partners.

Ms. Madia Amanova, Head of the Department of Monitoring and Forecasting of Emergency Situations of the Kyrgyz Republic, said, “I was particularly impressed by Korea’s approaches to water management, reuse, and application of AI. Several of these solutions could be adapted to the needs of Kyrgyzstan, and I believe our cooperation with GGGI can help translate these technologies into practical applications.”

Ms. Zukhrakhon Tillyakhodjaeva, Scientific Secretary at the Scientific Research Hydrometeorological Institute of the Hydrometeorological Service Agency under the National Committee on Ecology and Climate Change of the Republic of Uzbekistan, emphasized the value of Korea’s integrated approach, stating that “What impressed me most was the combination of automated monitoring systems and strong technical expertise. Korea’s experience in water resource monitoring and management provides valuable lessons that could be adapted to the Central Asia context.”

With a total value of approximately KRW 13.8 billion, this GGGI-led project focuses on establishing smart water management infrastructure, real-time monitoring systems, and flood early warning systems in disaster-vulnerable regions near the borders of Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, where climate-induced disaster risks are rapidly increasing. Beyond infrastructure investment, the project is strengthening the institutional and technical capacities of national and local agencies to better manage increasing climate-related risks. It is expected to directly project approximately 25,000 residents living in the target areas. Building on the pilot activities, GGGI also aims to develop follow-on climate investment proposals valued at approximately USD 50 million, helping scale successful technology demonstration and capacity building activities into larger and more sustainable climate investments.

This visit highlights how collaboration among partner countries expands into concrete field-level projects and technical partnerships, gaining added significance as it takes place just ahead of the inaugural Korea–Central Asia Summit, scheduled for September 17-18 in Seoul.

Ms. Hye Ryung Seo, Country Program Manager of GGGI’s Kyrgyzstan Country Office, stressed the urgency of the project, saying “The recent devastating floods in Nepal are a stark reminder of the growing climate risks facing mountain communities. For Kyrgyzstan and Central Asia, strengthening early warning systems, real-time monitoring, and climate-resilient water infrastructure is therefore both critical and timely.”

As Korea and Central Asia enter a new chapter of strategic cooperation, this initiative demonstrates the potential to combine Korean technology, regional partnerships, and climate finance to deliver practical solutions for greater water security and climate resilience.
