Forum of the Future for the Formulation of Green Secondary Cities Development Strategy in Fatick, Senegal

On Tuesday, May 21, at the City Hotel of Fatick, the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) and Fatick City Hall, in collaboration with key stakeholders, co-organized the Forum on the Future of Fatick. The forum was presided by Mr. Makhtar BA, the Sports Minister and City Mayor, and GGGI, represented by Mr. Mamadou KONATE (Acting Country Representative).

Fatick was one of the 10 cities selected for the extension phase of the Senegal Green Secondary Cities Development Program. This major event, in the urban history of Fatick, provided the opportunity to exchange ideas on the greening of the city. A variety of participants attended, representing government ministries and agencies, private and public sector financial institutions, international organizations, non-governmental organizations, and civil society.

The objectives of the forum were to: (i) establish the major issues of the city; (ii) share the sectoral visions and agree to an overall and consensual vision for the future of Fatick in the horizon of 2035; and (iii) provide guidance on strategic approaches and guidelines for the Fatick Green City plan.

The approach facilitated agreement on the 8 priority issues that constitute challenges for greening the city. The 25 selected strategic orientations proposed, among others, the revegetation of the city, improving the governance to reinforce the urban resilience capacities, strengthening the solidarity with the neighboring communes, and promoting behavioral change through setting up a volunteer’s network.
