Astana, Kazakhstan, September 30, 2025 – The Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan (MENR), together with the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), held a final workshop to present the outcomes of the Methane Gas Flaring Optimization Project in Kazakhstan.
The event gathered around 60 participants, including representatives from government agencies, Kazakhstani oil and gas companies, and international and national experts.
Launched in late 2023, with funding from the Korea Green New Deal Trust Fund (KGNDTF), the project marked an important step in Kazakhstan’s efforts to reduce associated gas flaring. One of the key outcomes was the development of a Roadmap for Optimizing Associated Gas Flaring in Kazakhstan, designed to provide practical guidance on reducing emissions while improving resource efficiency.

The workshop aimed to share and discuss the project’s main results, review the Roadmap, and assess recommendations for practical implementation. Discussions also focused on the pilot project and next steps required to address gas flaring challenges beyond the project’s completion.
Ms. Saule Sabiyeva, Director of the Climate Policy Department at MENR, emphasized that the project represents an important step in advancing Kazakhstan’s commitment to reducing methane emissions. “I would like to thank our colleagues from GGGI for their support in developing this important initiative. The results and recommendations will contribute to the ongoing work on developing oil and gas methane regulations in Kazakhstan,” she noted.
Mr. Jaeseung Lee, Deputy Regional Director for Asia at GGGI, highlighted the significance of the workshop in sharing key results and discussing future actions. “We will engage in a collaborative discussion about our proposed recommendations and the next steps for a successful transition,” he stated. “Over the last two years, this project has allowed us to dive deep into the challenges and opportunities surrounding gas flaring. We have identified critical gaps, analyzed practical and effective solutions, and, most importantly, developed a Roadmap for Gas Flaring Optimization in Kazakhstan.”
Kazakhstan became a Member State of GGGI in 2022, reaffirming its commitment to green growth and sustainable development. Addressing methane emissions has become a national priority for the country, given their significant impact on climate change. Kazakhstan recently joined the Global Methane Pledge, further strengthening its dedication to methane reduction efforts.
