Fiji Launches Electric Mobility Project for Cleaner, More Efficient Transport

Suva, Fiji – 26 March 2026, The Ministry of Public Works, Meteorological Services and Transport (MPWMST), in partnership with the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), today officially launched the Electric Vehicle Mobility and Integration in Fiji’s Land Transport Sector (EMoFi) project at an inception workshop held in Suva.

The EMoFi project is co-executed by MPWMST and GGGI, with financial support from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and implementation assistance from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The initiative is designed to support Fiji’s transition toward cleaner, more efficient, and sustainable land transport systems through strengthened policies, planning, and coordinated action.

The inception workshop brought together representatives from government ministries and agencies, development partners, the private sector, civil society, and technical institutions to discuss the project’s objectives and review the implementation approach.

Transport is one of the fastest-growing sources of greenhouse gas emissions in Fiji and remains heavily dependent on imported fossil fuels. As the number of vehicles continues to grow, so do fuel costs, pressure on infrastructure, and the wider economic burden linked to transport. The project aims to help Fiji respond to these challenges by creating the conditions for greater uptake of electric vehicles and more sustainable land transport solutions.

Through this initiative, GGGI will work closely with the Government of Fiji and national stakeholders to strengthen policy and regulatory frameworks, improve planning for sustainable urban mobility, support pilot actions, and build awareness and technical capacity across the public and private sectors.

Opening the workshop, Acting Deputy Secretary Transport & Utilities (A/DSTU) Andrew Pene, highlighted the importance of addressing Fiji’s transport challenges through coordinated action and long-term planning.

“This project is not only about electric vehicles. It is about helping Fiji build a cleaner, more efficient and more resilient transport system that supports our climate goals to achieve net-zero emission by 2050, strengthens energy security and economic resilience, and delivers practical benefits for our people and our economy.”

The workshop provided an important platform for stakeholders to share views, identify priorities, and help shape implementation from the outset. It also reinforced the importance of strong national ownership and close collaboration across ministries and partners as the project moves forward.

Speaking on behalf of GGGI, Pacific Regional Director Ratu Sakiusa Tuisolia emphasized that electric mobility is both an environmental and economic opportunity for Fiji.

“Fiji has a real opportunity to move early and show what a practical transition to cleaner transport can look like in the Pacific. This is not just about reducing emissions. It is also about lowering fuel dependence, improving energy security, and supporting a more efficient and future-ready economy.”

The project also aligns with Fiji’s broader national development and climate priorities, including efforts to reduce emissions, strengthen resilience, and support a more sustainable energy future. It comes at an important time as Fiji advances wider work on transport, energy, and low-emission development.

The EMoFi project forms part of a wider regional programme supporting electric mobility transitions in Pacific Island countries, including Solomon Islands and Vanuatu. In Fiji, the project is expected to help lay the foundation for cleaner transport systems through better coordination, stronger institutions, and practical action.

The Government of Fiji reaffirmed its commitment to working with partners to advance sustainable transport solutions that support national climate commitments, improve mobility, and strengthen long-term economic resilience.
