DAKAR, SENEGAL, September 9, 2024 –Key experts and stakeholders from across Africa are convening in Dakar, Senegal, to forge robust partnerships to accelerate climate investment in Africa. At the second Green Investment Roundtable, scheduled for September 9 to 11, 2024, stakeholders will gain a comprehensive understanding of investor perspectives, streamline decision-making processes for climate-related projects, showcase innovative projects from the private sector and commercial banks and accelerate climate investment in various projects from the participating countries, leveraging Senegal’s experience in the region.
The Green Investment Roundtable is a collaborative initiative facilitated by the African Union Commission (AUC) and the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) in partnership with the Government of Senegal and support from GIZ. This roundtable is part of the Global Affairs Canada-funded Transformative Climate Finance Program, which is an essential component in the operationalization of the African Union’s Green Recovery Action Plan (AU GRAP).
“The Green Investment Roundtable offers a valuable South-to-South learning opportunity, allowing participants to gain insights into Senegal’s effective climate finance strategies and encouraging their replication across the continent,” said Dr. Malle Fofana, Regional Director for Africa at GGGI.
“As AU member states make efforts to address climate change and achieve inclusive sustainable development, it is crucial to optimize the utilization of climate finance. This roundtable presents an important opportunity to align our efforts and explore innovative funding mechanisms to propel African countries forward,” remarked Harsen Nyambe Nyambe, Director of Sustainable Environment and Blue Economy at the African Union Commission.
“By sharing Senegal’s innovative approach to climate finance, this roundtable will help empower other countries to actively engage and collaborate on key people and climate-centric projects across both the public and private sectors. Our experience in the region will provide crucial insights into understanding investor perspectives, streamlining national decision-making, and fostering partnerships that accelerate climate investments,” said Pr. Daouda Ngom, Minister of the Ministry of Environment, and Ecological Transition in Senegal.
Discussions at the Green Investment Roundtable are expected to result in deeper understanding of the climate finance landscape, increased awareness of financing gaps, and productive discussions between priority sectors and potential investors. It will also seek to establish concrete commitments, finalizing investment plans for securing financing to implement transformative green projects. These efforts are set to drive green economic transformation across Africa, with subsequent initiatives promoting inclusive, sustainable growth throughout the region.
Participants will include government institutions, policymakers, investors, financial institutions, the private sector, civil society, and representatives of women and youth. They will engage in dialogue and knowledge exchange across five key thematic areas: Climate Finance, Clean Energy, Nature-Based Solutions, Sustainable Agriculture, and Green and Resilient Cities, with a focus on water management.
