Collaboration Boosts Forest and landscape restoration in Guatemala

Guatemala City, Guatemala, July 18, 2024 – The National Forestry Institute (INAB) of Guatemala, the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), and the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) have launched a project to advance sustainable forest and landscape restoration efforts in Guatemala.
The KOICA-funded project, “Korea-Mexico-Three Central American Countries Triangular Cooperation on Strengthening Capacities for Forest Landscape Restoration in Response to Climate Change,” aims to address climate change, protect biodiversity, and improve the livelihoods of local communities, by introducing innovative approaches to knowledge exchange and capacity development in forest and landscape restoration.
The collaboration will focus on two major components 1)Development of National Protocols and Knowledge Resources for Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR) and 2) Development of a Subnational Action Plan for Agroforestry.
“GGGI is grateful to commemorate such a strategic collaboration with INAB and KOICA in Guatemala, and we look forward to contributing to forest restoration in the country, particularly in Las Verapaces and Chimaltenango” stated Ms. Liliana Davila, Central American Representative and Sustainable Landscape Lead, GGGI.
Moreover, “KOICA appreciates these collaborative efforts towards forest restoration in Guatemala and pledges its full support for the success of this project”, added Mr. Sangjin Dong, Country Director, KOICA Guatemala.
In his speech, Mr. Mártir Vásquez, Deputy Manager of INAB, also underscored INAB’s commitment to forest restoration and enhancing the resilience of rural communities through this project. “Together, we will strengthen the institutional capacity for forest restoration in Guatemala and enhance our response to climate change”.
Through this collaboration, INAB, GGGI, and KOICA reinforce their dedication to sustainable development and environmental preservation in Guatemala. By uniting their efforts, they aspire to make a lasting impact on forest and landscape restoration in the country, leaving a positive legacy for both present and future generations.
