OBJECTIVE:

The COVID-19 pandemic overshadowed nearly everything in 2020, but at least one more big-   picture issue came to our attention: this was the year the “net zero” commitment by 2050 went mainstream. We have witnessed promising signs, with an increasing number of countries, including China, Japan, the Republic of Korea, and Canada having made net zero emissions pledges and the EU solidifying its own goals. For example, Korean President Moon Jae-in made the net zero announcement on October 28, 2020, committing to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. The Korean Green New Deal, announced earlier, is a unique opportunity to green the recovery from COVID-19 and accelerate climate action, demonstrating the path to achieving the net zero pledge.

2021 will be the year we get the details. The challenge for the Korean government now is to develop and implement solid policies and measures to demonstrate that the net zero 2050 target can indeed be achieved. Critical to the target is also to bring the private sector on board with commensurate commitments. That is what we propose to focus the Campaign on in the lead up to the P4G Summit on May 30-31, 2021.

On May 26, the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) and the Climate Change Center will organize a civil society and business event, inviting non-state actors, private sector representatives and the Campaign partners to better understand the exact path to eliminate emissions since corporate sustainability commitments are just at the starting point; progress through measurable results are needed. Commitments often do not provide enough details.
