Capacity building on GHGI software and guidelines of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)

Ouagadougou, May 16th – 27th, 2022 – The Permanent secretariat of the council for sustainable development (SPCNDD) in collaboration with the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) and support of the Swedish Cooperation (SIDA), organized a training on the IPCC software and guidelines for greenhouse gas inventories (GHGI).

Burkina Faso, which has benefited from the support of NDC Partnership, still needs capacity building to strengthen the national MRV framework as required by the enhanced transparency framework of the Paris Agreement. GGGI is committed to supporting the development of data sharing agreements, declarations, and models in order to make data available and strengthen national expertise for the estimation of GHG emissions and the assessment of the NDC.

During the training the twenty-eight participants including seven women had the opportunity to:
• deepen their understanding on the IPCC guidelines for GHG emission inventories in the Energy, AFOLU, Waste and IPPU sectors;
• enhance their skills on the inventory software (IPCC 2006) and the IPCC Emission Factor Database (EFDB);
• review activity data, specific emission factors and uncertainties in the data;
• improve their knowledge on the compilation of time series GHG inventory data for more accurate inventories.

The trainees were able to use real activity database and emission factor data covering the 4 sectors. They then proceeded to a simulation on the software adopting the methods used during previous GHGI development.

This training will improve the quality of Burkina Faso’s GHG inventory system in the MRV framework. It will contribute to avoid the risk of double counting of CO2 emissions and increase the number of national GHGI experts.
