Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, January 21, 2026 – Burkina Faso officially submitted its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC 3.0) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), reaffirming its commitment to climate resilience, low-emission development, and inclusive green growth. 

The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), through its Burkina Faso country office, supported the Government of Burkina Faso in the development of its third-generation Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC 3.0) from January to November 2025. The support was provided with financial assistance from the Government of Canada and in close collaboration with the NDC Partnership. This new NDC marks a decisive shift toward people-centered climate action, with Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) embedded as a core pillar of Burkina Faso’s national climate ambition

GGGI’s Contribution to the NDC 3.0 Process 

GGGI provided technical leadership on the gender-responsive quantitative assessment of the NDC 2.0, identifying gaps and opportunities to strengthen gender integration. Building on this analysis, GGGI supported the mainstreaming of gender-transformative and socially inclusive actions into NDC 3.0, contributing to a more equitable and results-oriented national climate framework. 

Embedding Gender Equality and Social Inclusion into National Climate Ambition 

Burkina Faso’s NDC 3.0 integrates gender-transformative and socially inclusive approaches across both mitigation and adaptation priorities. It places particular emphasis on: 

• Women, youth, children, persons with disabilities, and vulnerable communities, recognizing their heightened exposure to climate risks as well as their critical role as agents of change 

• Gender-responsive indicators, targets, and monitoring frameworks, to ensure accountability and measurable progress 

• Climate actions that reduce inequalities, while strengthening resilience, livelihoods, food systems, and social cohesion 

Through this approach, the NDC 3.0 moves beyond gender sensitivity toward transformational change, where climate action actively challenges structural inequalities and expands opportunities for inclusive development. 

Mobilizing Inclusive Climate Finance 

The NDC 3.0 serves as a strategic framework for mobilizing climate finance, translating national priorities into bankable investment opportunities. Financing pathways include climate funds, carbon markets and Article 6 mechanisms, Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs), and green and impact investments. 

A strong emphasis is placed on investments that empower women and youth and recognize their role as key contributors to Burkina Faso’s climate transition.

GGGI Burkina Faso remains committed to supporting the implementation, financing, and delivery of NDC 3.0, working with national stakeholders and development partners to translate inclusive climate ambition into measurable climate and development results.
