Rabat, Morocco, December 16, 2024 – Global Green Growth Institute Morocco and National Office for Food Safety/ Office National de Sécurité Sanitaire des Produits Alimentaires (ONSSA) successfully convened a workshop to raise awareness about the valuable applications of bio-digestate produced from the anaerobic digestion of organic waste. This workshop marks a crucial milestone in our Global Methane Hub-funded project, which aims to develop a comprehensive standard for bio-digestate utilization. This new standard will play a pivotal role in structuring the Morocco’s national Organic Waste-to-Energy (OWtE) program.
The absence of standardized bio-digestate use will present several challenges, including escalating waste disposal costs, missed opportunities for revenue generation, and adverse environmental impacts. By establishing this crucial standard, we will unlock the full potential of bio-digestate, enabling its safe and effective utilization as a valuable fertilizer in agricultural and green spaces. This will not only promote a more sustainable and efficient waste management system in Morocco but also will enhances the profitability of projects by creating new revenue streams from the sale of this valuable resource.
The workshop featured:
- Presentation of the Bio-digestate Standard: Key stakeholders were briefed on the finalized specification for bio-digestate, a critical milestone in ensuring its safe and effective use as a sustainable soil amendment.
- Expert-Led Sessions: Experts shared insights on bio-digestate composition, national and international regulatory frameworks, and practical applications for producers and end-users.
- A capacity-building session: aimed at potential producers and users of bio-digestate.
This new bio-digestate standard is a game-changer for Morocco; by facilitating the safe and responsible use of bio-digestate as a soil amendment, we can achieve a multitude of benefits. This includes a significant reduction in methane emissions, a substantial decrease in waste management costs, and a powerful incentive for increased investment in renewable energy and waste valorization technologies.
