Seoul, Republic of Korea, July 28, 2025 – The Republic of Benin has officially submitted its Instrument of Accession to become the 51st Member State of the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI). This significant milestone underscores Benin’s strong commitment to sustainable economic development and its dedication to inclusive, green growth. 

The Ministry of Economy and Finance of Benin, through its Deputy Chief of Cabinet, Ms. Adidjatou Hassan Zanouwi, emphasized the importance of this step, stating: “The Government of Benin is honored to join the Global Green Growth Institute as a member state. This milestone reflects our unwavering commitment to green growth and a sustainable, prosperous future for our people. Our existing collaboration has already demonstrated tangible progress, and we look forward to deepening this partnership to achieve even greater impact. With the support of GGGI’s global network and expertise, we are confident this alliance will drive transformative outcomes for Benin and beyond.” 

Welcoming Benin’s membership to GGGI, Deputy Director-General Mr. Gerard O’Donoghue, said: “At GGGI, we help our Member States drive forward their green transition through hands-on technical support and capacity development. We are pleased to welcome the Republic of Benin as our 51st Member State. With its vibrant economy and clear dedication to building climate resilience, Benin is poised to make significant progress in green growth. We look forward to collaborating closely to deliver sustainable solutions that will benefit both Benin and the wider global community”. 

The current collaboration between Benin and GGGI is focused on mobilizing sustainable finance, with a long-term project targeting the establishment of a Climate Finance Unit within the Ministry of Economy and Finance. The intention is to work together to mobilize significant streams of climate finance, including carbon market revenues, from and for the private and public sectors for bankable projects across critical sectors such as clean energy transition. Institutional capacity and frameworks will be strengthened across the board for long-term, sustained impact.  

Benin joins a growing network of countries committed to building low-carbon, climate-resilient, and inclusive economies. As the 11th African Member State—alongside Angola, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Senegal, Togo, Uganda, and Zambia—Benin’s membership strengthens the continent’s collective climate action and supports the nation’s long-term environmental and economic sustainability goals. 

Benin’s full membership will be confirmed on August 27, 2025, marking its official entry as the 51st Member State of the Global Green Growth Institute.

Membership to GGGI is open to any member state of the United Nations or regional integration organization that subscribes to the objectives of the Institute, namely: promoting sustainable development of developing and emerging countries, including the least developed countries, by: supporting and diffusing a new paradigm of economic growth: green growth, which is a balanced advance of economic growth and environmental sustainability; targeting key aspects of economic performance and resilience, poverty reduction, job creation and social inclusion, and environmental sustainability; and creating and improving the economic, environmental and social conditions of countries through partnerships between developed and developing countries and the public and private sectors.
