Phnom Penh, Cambodia, 18 September 2025 – Chaired by the National Focal Point for the ASEAN Working Group on Climate Change (AWGCC) in Cambodia, the country successfully completed its second meeting of the Methane Reduction Committee and Project Implementation unit, with participation from the Ministry of Environment (MOE), Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) and Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI).

This meeting follows the official project launch and the first MRC meeting on 6 May 2025, serving as a key milestone to review progress, clarify roles and responsibilities, and finalize sectoral focus areas for effective implementation.

Funded by the ASEAN-Korea Cooperation Fund (AKCF), the AKCMM project is a $20 million regional initiative being implemented over three years across nine ASEAN Member States, including Cambodia. The project aims to catalyze national action on methane emissions, one of the most potent greenhouse gases driving global warming.

In her welcome remarks, Ms. Nathalie Andre, GGGI Cambodia Country Representative, said: “Methane reduction measures can be both cost efficient measures to reduce greenhouse emissions and increase efficiencies in agriculture production and waste management – attracting investment into these key sectors for Cambodia.”

In Cambodia, the AKCMM project works with MOE, MAFF, and sub-national partners to address methane emissions from agriculture, and waste sectors. H.E. Sum Thy, AWGCC National Focal Point and Chair of the MRC in Cambodia emphasized: “Today’s MRC meeting has provided a comprehensive review of our methane mitigation efforts, confirming our alignment with national priorities. As we move forward, the established governance structures and sectoral focus areas will guide our actions, ensuring effective implementation and measurable outcomes.”

All members acknowledged the significant progress made since the first MRC meeting. The discussions covered project outputs in the agriculture and waste sectors, with particularly enriching exchanges on the feasibility concept note and the proposed implementation structure for Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD).

With project implementation structures in place and priority sectors confirmed, the meeting marked a significant milestone in Cambodia’s methane mitigation efforts. It provides a strong foundation for coordinated action, guiding the AKCMM project toward effective implementation and measurable impact in advancing low emission development and sustainable solutions.
