Seoul, Republic of Korea, May 18, 2026 – The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) hosted the Ambassador of India today to initiate discussions on India’s official accession as a member state. The meeting follows the landmark joint declaration by the national leaders of India and the Republic of Korea last month, in which both sides announced a reciprocal exchange of institutional membership — Korea joining the International Solar Alliance (ISA) and India joining GGGI.

During the high-level meeting at GGGI headquarters in Seoul, GGGI Executive Director Sang-Hyup Kim and H.E. Gourangalal Das, Ambassador of India to the Republic of Korea, mapped out the collaborative framework to support and accelerate India’s formal membership transition over the coming months. Both sides agreed to prioritize new strategic frontiers of cooperation, particularly in green hydrogen and climate technology, to drive tangible sustainability outcomes.

Sang-Hyup Kim, Executive Director of GGGI said, “We are deeply encouraged by India’s decision to join GGGI, as announced in the recent leaders’ joint declaration. India has been an invaluable partner since 2018, and its transition to an official member state will mark a new chapter in our shared mission to drive inclusive green growth across the Global South. We are ready to provide all necessary support to facilitate the upcoming accession process.”

H.E. Gourangalal Das, Ambassador of India to the Republic of Korea stated that “In the current global landscape, the Republic of Korea and the Government of India must take on additional responsibility to accelerate green growth and advance the climate agenda. In this light, India’s membership in GGGI is a significant step toward providing much-needed global momentum in the climate space.”  The Government of India is targeting the passage of the ratification bill for GGGI membership this coming November and is scheduled to discuss further action plans.

Since establishing its India country office in 2018, GGGI has driven scalable low-carbon solutions through strategic government partnerships, achieving key milestones including:

• • Renewable Energy & Infrastructure: Advanced the 600 MW Omkareshwar floating solar project and mobilized USD 250 million for Himachal Pradesh’s power sector reforms.
  • Sustainable Finance: Provided post-issuance assurance for REC Limited’s Green Bonds, valued at USD 500 million and JPY 61.10 billion.
  • Landscape & Climate Programs: Led the Narmada Landscape Restoration Project, engaging over 2,800 stakeholders, alongside national initiatives for low-carbon buildings and clean cooking.

India’s joining of GGGI, leveraging its position as the world’s most populous nation and fourth-largest GDP, will greatly enhance the organization’s global footprint. It is widely expected to be a powerful catalyst for fueling sustainable growth in the Global South and fast-tracking the Paris Agreement goals.

대한민국 서울, 2026 년 5 월 18 일 – 글로벌녹색성장기구(사무총장 김상협, 이하 “GGGI”)는 오늘 서울 본부에서 인도의 GGGI 회원국 가입을 협의했다. 이번 면담은 지난달 한-인도 정상회담에서 채택한 ‘공동 전략 비전’에 따른 후속 조치로, 당시 한-인도 양국은 “대한민국은 국제태양광연합(ISA)에 가입하고 인도는 GGGI에 가입”하기로 발표한 바 있다.

이번 면담에서 GGGI 김상협 사무총장과 고랑랄 다스(Gourangalal Das) 주한 인도대사는 향후 수개월 내 인도의 GGGI 가입 절차를 완료하기 위해 긴밀히 협력하기로 했으며 특히 그린수소와 기후기술 분야를 최우선 전략 협력 과제로 선정해 실질적인 성과를 도출하기로 합의했다.

GGGI 김상협 사무총장은 “지난 한-인도 정상회담 계기에 양국 정상이 합의한 인도의 GGGI 가입 결정을 진심으로 환영한다”며, “인도는 2018년부터 GGGI와 함께 해 온 핵심 파트너로, 이번 가입은 글로벌 사우스 전역에 포용적 녹색성장을 확산하는 결정적인 이정표가 될 것”이라고 강조했다. 이어 “향후 공식 가입 절차가 원활하고 신속하게 진행될 수 있도록 모든 지원을 아끼지 않겠다”고 밝혔다.

고랑랄 다스(Gourangalal Das) 주한 인도대사는 “최근의 국제정세 속에서 대한민국과 인도 정부는 녹색성장을 가속화하고 기후 의제를 진전시키기 위해 더 큰 책임을 맡아야 한다. 이러한 관점에서 인도의 GGGI 가입은 글로벌 기후 변화 대응에 강력한 동력을 불어넣는 중대한 전환점이 될 것”이라며 인도의 가입 의지를 재확인했다. 인도 정부는 오는 11월 GGGI 가입 비준안 통과를 목표로 하고 있으며 추후 실행 계획을 논의할 예정이다.

GGGI는 2018년 인도 사무소 설립 이후, 인도 중앙 및 지방 정부와 구축한 전략적 파트너십을 통해 다음과 같은 핵심 성과를 달성했다.

• • 재생에너지 인프라 구축: 600MW급 대규모 수상 태양광 프로젝트(옴카레슈와르 댐)를 추진하고, 세계은행(World Bank)와 협력해 전력 부문 개혁에 2억 5,000만 달러 규모의 재원 조달
  • 녹색금융 생태계 조성: 인도 국영기업 REC Limited가 발행한 약 1조원 규모의 국제 인증 녹색채권에 대한 사후 보증을 성공적으로 수행해 인도 녹색 자본 시장의 신뢰도 제고
  • 기후 복원 및 생활 밀착형 사업: 2,800 여 명의 지역 이해관계자가 참여한 생태계 복원 사업을 주도하고 전국 단위 저탄소 건축 및 친환경 취사 이니셔티브를 통해 인도 국민 삶의 질 개선

세계 최대의 인구 대국이자 GDP 기준 세계 4위의 경제 대국인 인도가 GGGI 가입시, GGGI의 국제적 영향력이 한층 강화될 전망이다. 특히 인도의 GGGI 가입은 글로벌 사우스의 지속가능한 성장을 견인하고 파리협정 목표 달성을 앞당기는 강력한 촉매제가 될 것으로 기대를 모은다.
