Waste
Cities globally, and at all levels of development, face both a resource and waste crisis due to rapid urbanization. The rate of waste generation will more than double over the next twenty years in lower income countries alone. The conventional approach on waste collection and unregulated disposal without the resource recovery are rarely sustainable, and have increasingly negatively assessed against economic, environmental and climate indicators. An estimated of 80% of wastewater produced is discharged untreated and many still defecate openly. These practices have serious health, safety, and environmental consequences especially affecting the urban poor.
The Waste CoP aims to provide thought leadership and knowledge exchange in sustainable waste management within GGGI and beyond. The core value of GGGIs work in waste to date has been around providing comprehensive solutions to municipal solid and liquid waste management based on the circular economy concept. GGGI promotes maximizing waste-to-resource opportunities in the waste value chain while contributing to climate mitigation and creating green jobs. For solid waste, GGGI develops policy and mobilizes green investment for waste-to-energy and resource recovery facilities in Asia, Africa and Latin America including Cambodia, Colombia, Lao PDR, India, Myanmar, Mexico, Nepal, Peru, Rwanda, Senegal, Thailand, Uganda, and Vietnam. For liquid waste, GGGI designs and implements solutions to increase access to wastewater and fecal sludge treatment services in developing countries with a focus on valorization of wastewater. GGGI provides advisory services to policy, planning and bankable business models for Decentralized Wastewater Treatment System (DEWATS) and Fecal Sludge Management (FSM). The countries we work in include Cambodia, India, Lao PDR, Nepal, Senegal, and Rwanda.
