Seoul, Republic of Korea, March 11, 2025—The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) officially inaugurated its new Director-General Sang-hyup Kim who began his 4-year term with GGGI on January 1, 2025. Director-General Kim will lead GGGI’s Secretariat and manage over 270 projects implemented in over 50 countries worldwide. Director-General Kim joined GGGI after serving as the Co-Chairperson of the Presidential Commission on Carbon Neutrality and Green Growth of the Government of the Republic of Korea and Vice-President of Green Growth and Sustainable Development Department at KAIST. The inaugural event was attended by over 140 dignitaries including and from GGGI line and partner Ministries in the Republic of Korea, Representatives of GGGI Member States and Partner countries through diplomatic missions, representatives from intergovernmental, and non-governmental organizations, and private sector.  

Congratulatory remarks to welcome Director-General Kim were delivered by GGGI’s President & Chair H.E. Ban Ki-moon; Acting President of the Republic of Korea H.E Choi Sang-mok through video message; Minister of Foreign Affairs Republic of Korea, H.E. Cho Tae-yul; Ambassador of Norway, H.E. Anne Kari Hansen Ovind; and the Governor of the Bank of Korea Rhee Chang Yong.  

In his welcome speech, H.E. Ban Ki-moon, President & Chair of GGGI, said “Considering his key role in the founding of GGGI, I believe Director-General Kim should be well-equipped  to take forward this institution into its next stage, and I hope everyone here will extend his or her support for the purposes of achieving together the global agenda for sustainable development.  

In his congratulatory video remarks, Acting President of the Republic of Korea Choi Sang-mok said, “ I strongly believe Director-General Kim’s leadership will provide GGGI with the right direction and innovative solutions to climate change issues. The Korean government will also strive to serve as a ‘global green ladder’ by reaching out to more developing countries to spread our green technology and share experiences in policy-making.”  

Minister of Foreign Affairs Republic of Korea, H.E. Cho Tae-yul said “Indeed, the coming years will be even more critical for GGGI. The realities of climate change — extreme weather, rising seas, and environmental degradation — are all increasingly evident.”  

The Ambassador of Norway H.E. Anne Kari Hansen Ovind reflected on Norway’s long trusted partnership with GGGI saying: “I would like to recognize your commitment to support and further advance GGGI’s carbon markets and Article 6 portfolio […] this work is a key priority in Norway’s international climate cooperation. As [GGGI] Vice-President of the Assembly and Vice-Chair of the Council, Norway is ready to provide the support needed to ensure the success of GGGI.” 

“Having worked with international organizations before I understand how essential international organizations are in addressing global challenges beyond national interests. GGGI plays a crucial role in helping developing countries in addressing climate change and to transition to a greener economy.” Mr. Rhee Chang Yong, Governor of the Bank of Korea said.  

Director-General Kim responded to the warm remarks by saying, “Building on the achievements of GGGI, my vision is now, to amplify and elevate GGGI’s position as an indispensable global asset for our sustainable future. Given the unprecedented challenges we face, we must stop relying on the approaches of the past to deal with the challenges of today. We need to start embracing new ideas, start forging unconventional partnerships, and explore untapped opportunities to bring innovative solutions.” Director-General Kim also shared his hope for GGGI by saying, “My aspiration for GGGI is not for it to be the largest, but rather, the most trusted international organization for our Member States and partners.”  

At the event Director-General Kim outlined GGGI’s strategic priorities moving forward, emphasizing plans to strengthen collaboration with key partners based on trust. He also highlighted the organization’s commitment to leveraging innovative technologies, such as the development of AI services for Member States and leading public-private partnerships to build a hydrogen ecosystem, to enhance GGGI’s global impact. A major focus will also be put on strengthening GGGI’s core: its people and its capabilities for excellence. Finally, attention on deepening GGGI’s collaboration hand-in-hand with the organization’s 49 Member States and 29 partner countries will continue to be strengthened so that GGGI can further build its reputation as a trusted partner in driving green growth for a sustainable future.

The Selection Committee for GGGI’s new Director-General was comprised of eight members—Ban Ki-moon (President of the Assembly and Chair of the Council of GGGI), Korea, Norway, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, and Dr. Bambang Brodjonegoro (Expert/Non-State Actor Member of the Council)—and evaluated the candidates based on their qualifications, experience, and vision for advancing GGGI’s mission of promoting green growth and sustainable development. Based on these evaluations, the Selection Committee recommended Professor Kim to the Council for nomination. The GGGI Council reviewed and approved the nomination, which was forwarded to the Assembly for consideration of approval. The Assembly subsequently approved and decided to appoint Sang-hyup Kim as the next Director-General of GGGI through a consensus-based decision-making process.

GGGI, 한국인 최초 김상협 사무총장 취임식 개최… 지속가능한 미래를 위한 새로운 비전 제시

서울, 2025년 3월 11일 — 글로벌녹색성장기구(GGGI)가 김상협 신임 사무총장의 공식 취임식을 개최했다. 김 사무총장은 2025년 1월 1일 임기를 시작했으며, 앞으로 4년 동안 GGGI의 사무국을 이끌고 전 세계 50개국 이상에서 진행되는 270여 개의 프로젝트를 관리하게 된다.

김총장은 대한민국 정부 대통령직속 탄소중립녹색성장위원회 공동위원장이자 한국과학기술원(KAIST) 녹색성장 지속가능 자문역 (부총장)으로 역임한 바 있으며, 이전에는 제주연구원장, 대통령실 녹색성장기획관으로 근무하며 2012년 GGGI 설립에 깊이 관여한 바 있다. 이날 취임식에는 한국 정부의 GGGI 관련 부처와 회원 및 파트너국 대사관, 국제기구 및 민간 부문을 포함한 140 여 명의 주요 인사들이 참석했다.

김 사무총장의 취임을 축하하는 연설은 전 유엔 사무총장이자 GGGI의 총회·이사회 반기문 의장을 비롯해 최상목 대통령 권한대행, 대한민국 외교부 장관 조태열, 노르웨이 대사 앤네 카리 한센 오반드, 한국은행 총재 이창용 등이 전달했다.

반기문 의장은 축사를 통해 “김 총장이 GGGI 설립에 핵심적인 역할을 한 만큼, 이 기관을 다음 단계로 발전시킬 수 있는 적임자라고 생각하며, 지속가능발전을 위한 글로벌 의제를 함께 달성하기 위해 여기 계신 모든 분들이 함께 노력해주기를 바란다”고 전했다.

최상목 대한민국 대통령 권한대행은 영상 축사를 통해 “김 총장의 리더십이 기후변화 문제에 대한 올바른 방향과 혁신적인 해법을 GGGI에 제시할 것으로 믿는다. 한국 정부도 더 많은 개도국에 우리의 녹색 기술을 전파하고 정책 수립 경험을 공유하는 ‘글로벌 녹색 사다리’ 역할을 할 수 있도록 노력하겠다”고 밝혔다.

조태열 대한민국 외교부 장관은  “앞으로 몇 년은  GGGI에게 더욱 중요한 시기가 될 것이다. 기상이변, 해수면 상승, 환경 파괴 등 기후 변화의 현실이 점점 더 분명해지고 있다.” 라고 전했다.

노르웨이 대사 앤네 카리 한센 오빈드는 노르웨이와 GGGI의 오랜 파트너십을 언급하며 “GGGI와 함께 탄소 시장과 파리협정 제 6조 포트폴리오를 지원하고 이를 국제 기후 협력의 주요 우선사항으로 삼을 것이다”라고 말했다.

이창용 한국은행 총재는 “국제기구가 국가적 이익을 넘어서 글로벌 문제를 해결하는 데 중요한 역할을 한다는 점을 잘 알고 있다. GGGI는 개발도상국들이 기후변화 문제에 대응하고 더 친환경적인 경제로 전환하는 데 중요한 역할을 할 것이다.” 라고 말했다.

김상협 사무총장은 각계 축사에 감사를 표하며 “지금까지 이뤄낸 성과를 기반으로 GGGI를 이 시대의 필수적인 글로벌 자산으로 더욱 강화해 나갈 것이다. 우리가 직면한 전례 없는 도전들을 해결하기 위해서는 기존의 방식에 머무르지 않고, 새로운 아이디어를 수용하며, 고정관념을 깨는 파트너십을 구축하고, 다양한 기회를 모색해 혁신적인 해결책을 마련해야 한다”고 밝혔다. 이어 “GGGI는 세계에서 가장 큰 기관이 되는 것이 아니라, 가장 신뢰받는 국제기구가 되어야 한다”고 강조했다.

김 사무총장은 향후 GGGI의 전략적 우선사항을 제시하며, 신뢰를 기반으로 핵심 파트너들과의 협력을 강화할 계획이라고 밝혔다. 또한, 회원국을 위한 AI 서비스 개발, 수소 생태계 구축을 위한 민관 파트너십 주도 등 혁신적인 신기술을 활용해 GGGI가 더욱 큰 영향력을 발휘할 수 있도록 발전시킬 예정이다. 아울러, GGGI의 핵심 자산인 인재와 역량 강화를 위한 노력을 지속하는 한편, 49개 회원국 및 29개 파트너 국가와의 협력을 더욱 공고히 하여, 지속 가능한 미래를 위한 녹색 성장의 신뢰받는 파트너로 자리매김할 수 있도록 힘쓸 계획이다.
