Seoul, Republic of Korea, August 22, 2024 – The Members of the Assembly of the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) appointed Sang-Hyup Kim, Professor of the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) as the new Director-General of GGGI for the term of 2025-2028. The appointment comes after a highly competitive global search. The Director-General will lead GGGI’s Secretariat and manage over 250 projects implemented in 51 countries worldwide. Professor Kim will begin his work with GGGI on January 1, 2025.

Professor Kim brings to GGGI a wealth of experience and a proven track record of driving significant initiatives toward green growth and environmental sustainability.  Professor Kim is currently the Co-Chairperson of the Presidential Commission on Carbon Neutrality and Green Growth of the Government of the Republic of Korea and Vice-President of Green Growth and Sustainable Development Department at KAIST. Previously, he has also served as Senior Secretary to the President of the Republic of Korea for Green Growth and President of the Jeju Research Institute and engaged deeply in the establishment of GGGI in 2012.

“I am delighted to welcome Professor Sang-Hyup Kim as GGGI’s new Director-General starting on January 1, 2025,” said Ban Ki-moon, President of the Assembly and Chair of the Council of GGGI.  “His extensive knowledge of green growth and sustainable development issues and his experience in helping establish GGGI in 2012 will be instrumental for addressing global climate challenges and assisting our Member States transition to the green growth model of development,” Mr. Ban added.

Professor Kim said about the appointment, “I am very honored to be appointed as Director-General of GGGI, which plays essential roles in expanding green growth models around the globe as climate change becomes one of the biggest challenges to our humanity. With the spirit of innovative and inclusive partnership, I will make my utmost efforts to achieve the goals and missions of GGGI and further its development.”

The current Director-General Dr. Frank Rijsberman will reach the end of his second four-year term later this year. The Assembly thanked him for his exemplary contributions to advancing GGGI’s green growth agenda. Under his leadership, GGGI significantly grew its membership and reached close to USD 12 billion investment commitment mobilized for low-carbon development in GGGI’s developing Member States.

The Selection Committee for GGGI’s new Director-General was comprised of eight members—Ban Ki-moon (President of the Assembly and Chair of the Council of GGGI), Korea, Norway, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, and Dr. Bambang Brodjonegoro (Expert/Non-State Actor Member of the Council)—and evaluated the candidates based on their qualifications, experience, and vision for advancing GGGI’s mission of promoting green growth and sustainable development. Based on these evaluations, the Selection Committee recommended Professor Kim to the Council for nomination. The GGGI Council reviewed and approved the nomination, which was forwarded to the Assembly for consideration of approval. The Assembly subsequently approved and decided to appoint Professor Kim as the next Director-General of GGGI through a consensus-based decision-making process.

The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) was founded as a treaty-based international, inter-governmental organization in 2012 at the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development. GGGI 총회, 김상협 신임 사무총장 임명

대한민국 서울, 2024년 8월 22일 – 글로벌 녹색 성장 연구소(GGGI) 총회는 2025-2028년 임기의 신임 사무총장으로 김상협 교수를 임명했으며 2025년 1월 1일 부터 GGGI에서 업무를 시작한다. 이번 임명은 전 세계적으로 치열한 경쟁을 거친 끝에 이루어졌으며 김상협 신임 사무총장은 GGGI 사무국을 이끌며  51개국에서 시행 중인 250개 이상의 프로젝트를 관리하게 된다.

김교수는 녹색 성장과 환경 지속 가능성을 위한 중요한 이니셔티브를 추진해온 풍부한 경험과 입증된 실적을 바탕으로 GGGI에 합류할 예정이다. 현재 그는 대한민국 정부  대통령직속 탄소중립녹색성장위원회 공동위원장이자 한국과학기술원(KAIST) 녹색성장 지속가능 자문역 (부총장)으로 재직 중이며 이전에는 제주연구원장, 대통령실 녹색성장기획관으로 근무하며 2012년 GGGI 설립에 깊이 관여한 바 있다.

반기문 GGGI 총회 의장 겸 이사회 의장은 “김상협 교수를 2025년 1월 1일부터 GGGI의 새 사무총장으로 맞이하게 되어 기쁩니다”라고 말했다. 그는 또한 “녹색성장과  지속 가능 발전 문제에 대한 폭넓은 지식과 2012년 GGGI 설립에 기여한 그의 경험은 글로벌 기후 문제를 해결하고 회원국들이 녹색성장 개발 모델로의 전환하도록 지원하는 데 큰 도움이 될 것 입니다”라고 덧붙였다.

또한 김 교수는 다음과 같이 임명 소감을 밝혔다. “기후변화가 인류에게 가장 큰 도전과제 중 하나가 되면서 전 세계에 녹색성장 모델을 확산시키는 데 필수적인 역할을 하는 GGGI의 사무총장으로 임명되어 매우 영광입니다. 혁신적이고 포용적인 파트너십 정신으로 GGGI의 목표와 사명을 달성하고 GGGI의 발전을 보다 진전시키기 위해 최선을 다하겠습니다.”

현 사무총장인 프랭크 라이즈버만 박사는 올해 말 4년의 두 번째 임기를 마칠 예정이다. 총회는 GGGI 녹생성장 정책 이행, 회원국 수 증진 및 개발도상국 회원국들의 저탄소 개발을 위해 약 120억 달러에 가까운 투자 약정을 달성 한 그의 공로에 감사를 표했다.
