About GGGI in Uganda

GGGI has been working in Uganda since 2016 to accelerate the country’s transition to a green model of economic development.

GGGI’s program in Uganda is aligned with the country’s “Vision 2040” in its ambition to transform the country into a strong, inclusive, and middle-income country by 2040. GGGI supports the Government of Uganda to achieve this goal with sustainability and inclusivity by enabling the integration of green growth at the heart of the country’s planning efforts.

The program is implemented by a dedicated team of technical experts embedded within local and central government institutions. GGGI’s team provides timely and high-quality demand-driven technical and advisory assistance across seven programmatic solutions, in line with Uganda’s transition towards a sustainable and prosperous green economy.

Our Collective Journey

GGGI in Uganda has achieved significant sustainable development milestones through its years of activity in the country. In support of the mobilization of green finance, GGGI played a leadership role in the establishment of a Climate Finance Unit (CFU) within the Ministry of Finance Planning and Economic Development (MoFPED). The CFU is tasked with facilitating the integration of climate change into financial planning, budgeting and decision-making processes. It is also responsible of mobilizing climate finance at scale to achieve climate resilience and greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation in line with the country’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) targets.

Furthermore, GGGI has supported the National Planning Authority in the integration of green growth in Uganda’s national planning process through the integration of green indicators in the National Development Plan 3 (NDP III) and National Development Plan 4 (NDP IV). To advance Circular Economy in the country, GGGI has supported the development of a comprehensive strategy as well as implementation plans for waste management. GGGI has also supported the development of investment plans, with plans for the construction of three waste sorting centers, a waste diversion center, and a fecal sludge treatment plant with a focus on waste-to-resource strategy—combating pollution and promoting circular economy developed.

Further support has been provided to waste management value chain actors, including Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), to strengthen their businesses models and service provision.

To advance green urban development, GGGI has worked extensively with government agencies like National Physical Planning Board (NPPB), the Ministry of Local Government (MoLG), MoFPED, Arua City Council and Gulu City Council to develop the Physical Development Plans 2022-2040 for both Gulu and Arua to ensure sustainable development. Similarly, to promote green and inclusive industrial practices, GGGI has spearheaded the development of Guidelines for Developing Uganda’s Industrial Parks and Freezones, and the National Low-Carbon Industrialization Strategy for the years 2020-2040.

To support green businesses to scale up their innovations, GGGI Uganda has worked with E4Impact and other partners to support 25 startups. 18 of these companies pitched their business ideas to potential investors and two have reached the stage of discussing concrete investments. GGGI has also worked with GIZ to initiate the Women in Climate Change (WICC) initiative in 2021, which has now grown into a strong movement advocating for climate action.
