About GGGI in Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka joined the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) in 2019 with the full commitment to supporting the government of Sri Lanka as it strives to achieve its sustainable development and Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) goals. The Ministry of Environment serves as GGGI’s direct government counterpart, with GGGI embedded within the ministry. GGGI also has a close working relationship with the Ministry of Transport and Highways and other agencies, following GGGI’s unique in-country model, where it is positioned as a neutral, trusted advisor and strategic development partner.
The GGGI Sri Lanka Country Planning Framework (CPF) 2021-2024, lays out the priority strategic interventions for GGGI’s program in the country, jointly identified with government through a series of consultations as follows:
1. Strengthening climate resilience through enhanced adaptation planning.
2. Establishing energy-efficient and eco-friendly transport systems.
3. Promoting green energy and energy efficiency with bankable projects.
4. Promoting sustainable landscapes, including forest and mangrove restoration.
5. Advancing innovative green finance, circular economy, and waste management.
Through a combination of policy advisory, institutional capacity building, and investment mobilization, GGGI serves as a catalyst for transformative change in Sri Lanka by supporting Sri Lanka’s journey toward a greener, climate resilient, and more inclusive future.
Our Collective Journey
The partnership between the Government of Sri Lanka and GGGI has been a transformative collaboration driving Sri Lanka’s transition toward a green, resilient, and inclusive economy. Since becoming GGGI’s 30th member in 2019, Sri Lanka has leveraged GGGI’s expertise and neutral advisory role to implement high-impact initiatives aligned with its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by supporting institutional strengthening, policy support, and green finance mobilization.
GGGI’s Sri Lanka Country Planning Framework (CPF) 2021-2024, developed in collaboration with the Government, identifies strategic priorities such as climate resilience, e-mobility, renewable energy, sustainable landscapes, and green finance. Initiatives such as the GCF NAP Readiness Project and the development of sustainable finance frameworks have demonstrated GGGI’s ability to mobilize investments and strengthen institutional capacities. These programs are unlocking opportunities for adaptation and mitigation projects while integrating climate action into national and sub-national planning processes.
Looking ahead, our shared journey is poised to address emerging challenges and seize new opportunities. GGGI aims to deepen collaboration with Sri Lanka. Together, we will enhance access to climate finance, scale transformative green investments, and mainstream sustainability into key sectors. Through this partnership, GGGI remains committed to supporting Sri Lanka in achieving its climate goals and accelerating its green growth and climate resilience.
