About GGGI in Rwanda

GGGI has been working with the Government of Rwanda since 2012 to achieve the country’s ambition of becoming a climate-resilient, low-carbon and high-income country by 2050. GGGI’s work in Rwanda focuses on supporting the country’s efforts to mobilize green and climate finance, strengthening climate change resilience of farmers through climate-smart agriculture practices, and promote sustainable energy such as solar energy. In addition, the Rwanda program is also involved in urban wetland rehabilitation, ecosystem restoration, sustainable waste management (including hazardous and e-waste) as well as implementing innovative solutions for urban sanitations. Other activities include the promotion of green buildings and green construction practices, sustainable mobility (including e-mobility) as well as flood and landslides management, and green cities planning and development.

GGGI’s Rwanda Country Program is implemented by a dedicated team of technical experts embedded within local and central governmental institutions. GGGI’s team provides timely and high-quality demand-driven technical and advisory assistance solutions in line with Rwanda’s sustainable development and green growth agenda.

Our Collective Journey

GGGI in Rwanda has achieved significant milestones across
different sectors. Following GGGI’s support and advisory
Assistance, the Government of Rwanda institutionalized the Rwanda Green Fund (FONERWA), strengthening its capacity to mobilize finance for green growth projects and initiatives. Through the National Roadmap for Green Secondary City Development, GGGI in Rwanda leads efforts to mainstream green growth principles in urban development to foster nationwide green urbanization.

GGGI also supported the Rwanda Housing Authority to
develop a Green Building Minimum Compliance System as a
baseline for green buildings. This initiative aimed to promote sustainable building practices and environmental resilience in the construction sector.

GGGI also mobilized substantial funding for the Nyandungu
Eco-Tourism Park is part of efforts to restore and conserve urban wetland ecosystems and pioneered innovative schemes such as the Public Bike Sharing scheme, which is designed to champion green mobility.
