About GGGI in Mongolia
Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) has been working with the Government of Mongolia since 2014 to directly support the Government’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and long-term policy ‘Vision 2050’ through providing technical assistance and mobilizing green investment.
GGGI in Mongolia provides timely and high-quality demand-driven technical and advisory assistance across a range of sectors, including energy, climate action, green financing and carbon markets. GGGI collaborates closely with the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MECC), the Ministry of Economics and Development (MED) and the Ministry of Construction and Urban Development (MCUD) with technical expertise, policy development and mobilizing resources for green projects.
Our Collective Journey
GGGI in Mongolia has achieved significant green growth impact across different sectors. In the energy sector, GGGI has provided technical assistance and policy advisories to the Government in implementing the Energy Efficiency Law (2015) and the National Energy Efficiency Action Program (NEEAP, 2017).
GGGI carried out a business case study at the 122nd Public School in Songinokhairkhan district, which is located in a remote and off-grid site. The study raised finance and demonstrated the feasibility of replacing current coal-fired heating boilers (HOBs) with ground source heat pumps in combination with electric boilers.
GGGI has also initiated a Thermo-technical retrofitting project targeting a precast panel building, which is home to over 20% of Ulaanbaatar city’s population, and raised a financial award of USD 32.5 million.
In the climate action sector, GGGI supported the Government of Mongolia in reviewing existing analysis for the GHG Inventory and NDC mitigation assessment. This included examining methods and tools used to estimate GHG emissions in the national GHG inventory and developing projections as part of the NDC (Phase I). Meanwhile, GGGI has supported the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change in building the capacities of sub-national level government staff to develop provincial-level climate change action plans. In total, approximately 300 local government staff were included in the training
Lastly, in climate finance markets, GGGI initiated and contributed to the development of the Mongolian Green Finance Corporation (MGFC) and raised USD 50 million in startup investment.
Our Impact So Far (2017-2026)
GGGI’s impact in Mongolia includes:
1. About USD 125 million green investment to be facilitated.
2. Up to 3,000 people built capacities in climate change and green growth.
3. More than 10 policy documents have been developed and adapted by the Government.
4. Nearly 1,500 households facilitated with better living conditions, with 375 precast residential buildings retrofitted.
