GGGI in Mexico

The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) established its office in Mexico in 2013. In 2014, its presence was ratified by the Senate.

Following the development of its Country Planning Framework (CPF) 2021-2025, GGGI has focused on supporting Mexico in fulfilling its Nationally Determined Contributions’ (NDCs) mitigation and adaptation objectives, as well as the 2030 Agenda through targeted initiatives.

FOCUS AREAS:

– Sustainable Finance. Catalyzing and accelerating access to climate finance and green investments for public and private sectors. Encompasses green bankable projects, investment proposals, national financing vehicles, green & climate instruments, carbon-focused engagements.

– Climate Action. Inclusive green growth plans, LT-LEDS, NDC support, MRV system design, climate diplomacy.

– Sustainable Landscapes. Achieving a circular and sustainable bioeconomy while preserving healthy natural systems.

– Sustainable Mobility. Supporting the decarbonization of the transport sector through the promotion of electromobility and non-motorized transport.

– Green industries. Focuses on green industrial parks, green supply chains, energy efficiency in SMEs, labeling, and standards.

– Gender and social inclusion. Integrating gender perspective and promoting the inclusion of vulnerable populations across public policy and financial instruments.

Our Collective Journey

GGGI plays a central role at the forefront in Mexico’s sustainable development efforts, implementing its Country Planning Framework and Subnational Strategy with a focus on climate action, green finance, sustainable landscapes, and low-carbon transport.

A key achievement has been the mobilization of over USD 1.5 billion in green investments through thematic loans and sustainable bonds.

GGGI has also supported the development, socialization and capacity building of Mexico’s Sustainable Finance Mobilization Strategy, Sustainable Taxonomy and ESG regulation for market issuers. Additionally, GGGI has provided technical assistance to national development banks and financial intermediaries to integrate and strengthen environmental, social, gender and governance policies, procedures and systems to scale up sustainable finance.

In urban mobility, GGGI has supported the deployment of 100+ electric buses in Mexico City and Nuevo León, benefiting 360,000 daily riders and reducing 300,000 tons of CO2e emissions over 15 years. In the land-use sector, it has helped mobilize resources for sustainable agriculture in Central-West Mexico and landscape restoration in the Yucatán Peninsula, while also supporting green technology adoption amongst SMEs in Chihuahua through an industrial decarbonization roadmap and a USD 1.5 million green credit line.

Furthermore, GGGI has supported the enhancement and implementation of Mexico’s NDC, while supporting efforts to strengthen the voluntary carbon market. Its capacity-building efforts have reached 4,500 individuals, with a strong focus on gender inclusion, as 50% of participants and 84% of facilitators were women.

GGGI also promotes social equity by supporting the development of gender policies in financial institutions, ensuring sustainability efforts are inclusive and far-reaching.
