Indonesia is a founding Member of the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), signing the Agreement on the Establishment of GGGI at the Rio+20 Conference on September 17, 2012, and depositing its instrument of ratification on September 26, 2014. A 2014 Presidential Decree established GGGI as an international organization operating in Indonesia, and a Host Country Agreement (HCA) was ratified in 2020.
The Green Growth Program (GGP) Indonesia is implemented jointly by the Government of Indonesia and GGGI through the Ministry of National Development Planning/The National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas), involving related national and sub-national governments.
The Government of Indonesia strives for strong annual economic growth of 6% by 2045 while committing to 31.89% greenhouse gas emission reductions by 2030, as stated in its Enhanced Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC). It is, therefore, essential for Indonesia to promote a model of economic growth known as “green growth” that targets key aspects of economic performance such as poverty reduction, job creation, social inclusion, and environmental sustainability.
Since 2013, the Government of Indonesia and GGGI have been collaborating to promote green growth principles between the government and other public and private sectors. The GGP Phase III (2021-2025) focuses not only on the rate of economic growth but also on its quality, namely the ability of growth to deliver multiple economic, social, and environmental benefits that improve the quality of people’s lives across all segments of society.
GGGI’s multi-pronged impact on sustaining green growth in Indonesia ranges from mobilizing investment commitments and advocating for climate policy reforms to providing green jobs and strengthening the capacity of key national and subnational institutions.
The Green Growth Program in Indonesia marked its 10th anniversary in 2023, helping create outcomes that will result in significant impact in the coming years for green and low-carbon economic growth, environmental protection, and improved livelihoods of thousands of people in Indonesia.
Green investments, policies, and knowledge are three outcomes critical to creating impacts for Indonesia. These outcomes work together to drive the transition to an inclusive, carbon-neutral, and sustainable economy.
The Green Growth Program is committed to improving Indonesia’s National Medium-term Development Plan (RPJMN) and its Low-Carbon Development Initiative (LCDI), initiated by the Ministry of National Development Planning/Bappenas. The Program also strives to achieve Indonesia’s international commitments to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and to its climate ambitions for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
Our impact in Indonesia includes:
– $566.6M USD in green investment commitments mobilized from 2021-2023
– 11.2M hectares of natural capital protected from deforestation
– 81,000 people estimated to gain access to clean energy
– 11,800+ people participated in capacity-building activities from 2021-2023 (43% women)
