Training on Green Growth Performance Measurement (GGPM) sponsored by GGGI and World Bank in Vang Vieng, Laos PDR

Vang Vieng, Lao PDR, November 19-21 – The GGGI Lao PDR team in partnership with the National Institute for Economic Research (NIER) and the Ministry of Planning and Investment (MPI) held a workshop on Green Growth Performance Measurement (GGPM) in Vang Vieng, Lao PDR today. This event included experts from GGGI and line ministries and key stakeholders including, but not limited to, MPI, NIER, the Ministry of National Resources and Environment, Ministry of Energy and Mines, Ministry of Finance, and Ministry of Science and Technology. The three-day national workshop was co-chaired by Madam Sisavanh Didaravong, Deputy Director General of the Center for Development Policy Research of Ministry Planning and Investment, and Dr. Jason Lee, GGGI’s Country Representative for Lao PDR.

The objectives of the three-day workshop were to introduce the framework of GGPM and also types of green growth indicators that the Government of Lao PDR could use to assess its own performance. GGGI experts provided in-depth training on indicators and index development and facilitated break-out sessions. Group discussions and interactions amongst participants allowed for value added knowledge and experience sharing based on current Lao PDR situations. The third day of the workshop was focused on discussing the current status of climate finance in Laos PDR. The sessions were designed to raise awareness of international climate finance architecture and to encourage group learning and presentations applying lessons learned and identified gaps.

The event was a learning experience for all parties and led to further understanding on how GGPM can be applied in the Lao context. The Government of Lao PDR is currently preparing the National Green Growth Strategy and green growth indicators in the GGPM framework that will constitute targets to measure the progress of the strategy.
