Dr. James Seong-Cheol Kang is Principal Transport Specialist at the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), where he previously managed the Mongolia and China country programs for green growth planning and now leads research in transportation and quantitative analysis. Prior to joining GGGI in 2011, he served as Director of the Center for Global Transport Research at the Korea Transport Institute (KOTI). At KOTI, he conducted projects in aviation, logistics, and road transportation and led joint research activities with the World Bank, ASEAN, and the East-West Center.
He received a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering and an M.S. degree in Transportation, both from Seoul National University in Korea. After working in the private sector for several years at a civil engineering consulting firm, he was awarded the Korean Government Overseas Scholarship. He received dual Master’s degrees in Transportation and Operations Research from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and earned his Ph.D. in Systems Engineering at Boston University. His areas of expertise and research interests include transportation planning, operations research, and systems engineering. He has authored more than 20 academic papers in those areas.
