Fenella Aouane

Fenella Aouane is the Director and Head of Carbon Pricing at GGGI. Fenella’s role as Head of Carbon Pricing, is to create the strategy and vision for how carbon pricing can help countries increase the climate ambition through transactional carbon finance inflows. This involves, coordinating across the organizational network; with other business units and country teams, developing and managing strategic partnerships as well as overseeing the Carbon Pricing unit overall.

As Lead of CPU, Fenella has a wealth of over 20-years’ industry experience in financial markets having been involved in carbon markets since 2005, with the first UK Emission Trading Scheme. Before joining GGGI, Fenella spent 7 years structuring international carbon transactions with an international investment bank. She helped to lead the bank into multiple award winning, first- to- market transactions involving, amongst others, pre-payments against tranched portfolios of emission reducing projects. She later focused on origination in Africa, resulting in the bank holding the largest portfolio of African emission reducing projects globally.

She additionally helped to design and run the ACAD (Africa Carbon Asset Development) program – the first public/private program of its type between UNEP FI and Standard Bank to help allocate grant funding and develop capacity building for emission reducing projects across sub-Saharan Africa.

Fenella has an honours degree in Business from Oxford Brookes university, has lived in South Africa and London before moving to Seoul.
