Senegal signs Host Country Agreement with GGGI

DAKAR, SENEGAL – April 14, 2017 – The Republic of Senegal and Global Green Growth Institute today signed a Host Country Agreement (HCA) in support of Senegal’s sustainable development. The signing ceremony was held in the conference room of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and was presided over by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Mankeur Ndiaye. Addressing the audience, which included H. E. Ms. Hyo-eun Kim, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea in Senegal, and Mrs. Yvette Nyombayire Rugasaguhunga, Second Counselor at the Embassy of the Republic of Rwanda in Senegal, His Excellency outlined GGGI objectives in promoting sustainable development in the least developed countries (LDCs), the most vulnerable to the impact of climate change:

“Environmental sustainability is undoubtedly one of the major challenges of the 21st century. Climate change is an imminent danger to the entire humanity and calls for global and concerted action. Unfortunately, the injustice behind its consequences is that it affects the world most deprived populations, those who are the least responsible of the greenhouse gas emissions.”

“I would like to highlight that GGGI has positioned itself as strategic partner of Senegal to accompany in its evolution towards green growth, through the supports development and implementation of strategies on poverty reduction and social inclusion based on environmental sustainability and green growth sustained by an economy that is sober in carbon,” added the Minister.

In pursuing these development goals, the Minister of Foreign Affairs underlined that Senegal relies on an organization such as GGGI, through relevant choices and approach to strive, not only, for renewing thoughts on suitable development model, but to contribute to the mobilization of state and non-sate actors to uptake new means of production based on an enlightened and consolidated view of a resilient world with green, inclusive and strong growth.

GGGI Country Representative, Mr. Mahamadou Tounkara, also addressed the audience and emphasized the ambition of GGGI to accompany Senegal in its transition towards a green growth model. The cooperation between GGGI and Senegal will help contributing to bring lasting solutions to the challenges related to urban development, land use, green governance and access to green investments.

Attending the ceremony were representatives and members from the Cooperation framework steering committee comprised of the ministries of Environment, Finance, Local Governance, Energy, Planning, Transport, Agriculture, Employment, Industry, those ministries in charge of research and hydraulics, the Economic Social and Environment Council, the Association of Mayors of Senegal, the private sector (COPERES), and the Civil Society (CONGAD).

The signing ceremony was followed by a press conference covered by broadcasters Soleil, RFM and the national television RTS1.
