Stakeholders’ consultation meeting on Mongolia’s Monitoring, Reporting and Vertification (MRV) System

The GGGI Mongolia team hosted a half-day stakeholders’ consultation meeting on Mongolia’s Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) system on March 20 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

In March 2017, GGGI launched a MRV program to support the MRV framework establishment and capacity building in 14 countries based on consultations with its member and partner countries. Mongolia was identified as one of the priority countries for this program and support the work on nationally determined contribution (NDC) implementation underway. GGGI’s MRV team in coordination with the GGGI Mongolia country team will support Mongolia establish an MRV system that will support the country in meeting its obligations under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the Paris Agreement (PA), and the country’s nationally determined contributions (NDC).

Following on its 2015 intended NDCs (INDC) submission, which have become its NDCs following the country’s ratification of the PA in April 2016 and the PA’s entry into force in November 2016, Mongolia has submitted its first biennial update report (BUR) which is currently undergoing the technical analysis as part of the international consultation (ICA) process for developing nations. A third national communication is due.

GGGI will provide technical assistance to Mongolia in setting up an MRV system, defining its coverage (both sectors and regions), and the necessary institutional arrangements required, as well as on its other technical components. This will equip the Government of Mongolia with credible data sources for informed decision-making in relation to green growth, NDCs, as well as on identifying climate finance routes. The country will also become capable of tracking progress against its own climate change mitigation and adaptation commitments adhering to required international standards for transparency.

GGGI is organizing this stakeholders’ workshop convening key government officials, departments, other international players and relevant technical experts in Mongolia to initiate a stakeholder consultation process for MRV set-up. Additional support is provided by the Green Technology Center, Korea.
