Italy and GGGI Sign Contribution Agreement for Cooperation to support Ethiopia’s NDC Implementation

23rd Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC (COP23)
BONN GERMANY – November 14, 2017

The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) and the Italian Ministry for the Environment, Land and Sea (IMELS) today signed a cooperation agreement to support the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia to implement its Nationally Determined Contribution to the Paris Agreement. Under the agreement, IMELS contributed EUR 100 thousand to GGGI to provide technical assistance to increase resilience and adaptation to climate change in line with Ethiopia’s Climate Resilient Green Economy (CRGE) Strategy.

The commitment was completed at a signing ceremony between the Director-General of GGGI, Dr. Frank Rijsberman, and the Director General, IMELS, Francesco La Camera. Dr. Rijsberman noted “The agreement is a demonstration of GGGI and the Italian Ministry for the Environment, Land and Sea commitment to support the transition to a model of green growth”.

In Ethiopia, GGGI has helped develop projects and mobilize funding for the national CRGE Facility, which GGGI helped establish and is now supporting through technical assistance. A first USD 10 million project was approved by the Adaptation Fund. A further USD 50 million climate adaptation proposal has been submitted to GCF, and at least USD 140 million has been committed by the Danish Business Finance Center for a water treatment and distribution system in Mekelle, Tigray.
