Climate Action Planning and Support

Addressing climate change is one of the critical environmental challenges of our time and is essential to achieving green growth. GGGI works to address climate change by supporting Member and partner countries to accelerate the implementation of their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement, while simultaneously achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and their national green growth targets. This work is encapsulated in GGGI’s NDC Alliance, which brings together work across GGGI to support countries in their efforts to mitigate and adapt to climate change.

Theory of Change: Climate Action Planning and Support

GGGI supports national efforts to translate climate commitments contained in Nationally Determined Contributions under the Paris Agreement, into concrete climate action. GGGI’s approach encompasses six key sectors, including: governance; implementation of targets; measurement, reporting and verification (MRV); financing; capacity building and knowledge sharing; and sectoral interventions.

Through three related projects, GGGI supports the its member countries to achieve their NDC readiness work supports efforts of member countries to elaborate sector-specific NDC implementation readiness-level roadmaps and planning processes in order to mainstream climate change into development and green growth plans, to access domestic and international climate finance, and to establish robust MRV systems to measure, report and verify their emissions, progress on NDCs and their technological and capacity needs in their efforts to design and implement climate change programs to meet the objectives of the Convention and the Agreement. GGGI’s climate diplomacy program works specifically with vulnerable countries, including the Least Developed Countries (LDC) Group, to support the implementation of their Paris Agreement commitments as well as the negotiation of the Paris Agreement Work Program under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
