Global Green Growth Institute to hold a five-day event in Jeju in September

Image 2SEOUL – July 11, 2016 – The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) and its partners will organize the Global Green Growth Week (GGGWeek2016), on September 5-9, on Jeju Island, Republic of Korea. Under the theme of “Maximizing Impact for Inclusive and Sustainable Green Growth,” GGGWeek2016 will serve to identify practical, innovative solutions to sustainability challenges and strengthen partnerships that deliver growth that is pro-poor, inclusive, and environmentally sustainable. It will highlight four thematic priorities of energy, water, land-use and green cities that are central to achieving strong, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth. The sessions throughout the five-day event are designed to maximize progress arising from important global meetings. 2016 is a crucial year to translate commitments on climate change and development finance into concrete actions and plans.

Particular emphasis will be placed on three issues during GGGWeek2016. First, the Green Growth Knowledge Platform (GGKP) will examine ways to bring benefits to the poor through social inclusion. Second, there will be a discussion on the needed capacity of developing countries by zooming in on issues, such as bankable projects and the role of financing vehicles. Third, the coal-versus-renewable dilemma in Asia will be discussed to further enhance our understanding of how we can give renewables an even stronger role.

“Finance is an important issue. GGGWeek2016 will examine three aspects of finance: the importance of developing innovative international financial instruments for green growth, strengthening national financing vehicles and building solid project proposals. The biggest challenge is finance and we need to find blended financial models and innovative solutions to mobilize finance,” says Yvo de Boer, Director-General of the Global Green Growth Institute.

“The sessions throughout the Week will focus on discussing ways to mobilize finance for climate action and green growth, drive renewable energy and green investment and bring benefits and create better lives and livelihoods for poor people in society by using green growth policies,” he added.

The Week will comprise of more than 60 discussion sessions and side events. The Global Green Growth Summit will address barriers to green growth investments; the Asia Regional Policy Dialogue will examine the challenges of moving away from coal to renewables; Country Focus sessions will showcase GGGI’s projects around the world, highlighting green growth milestones; the Green Growth Knowledge Platform (GGKP) Annual Conference and Knowledge Partners Workshop will focus on pro-poor inclusive growth and green growth knowledge sharing; the New Climate Economy and GGGI Africa Partnership Event will identify major opportunities for accelerating inclusive growth while reducing climate risk in low-income countries and the Inclusive Green Growth Partnership Meeting will bring together heads of multilateral development banks, UN regional commissions and GGGI to seek ways to increase green investment flows in developing and emerging countries.
