GGGI’s engagement with Colombia began in early 2013 as part of the organization’s Amazon Basin Green Growth Planning and Implementation project that was designed to assist Amazon Basin countries to build international partnerships to strengthen the maintenance of their forests and promote the adoption of green growth policies. Currently, GGGI is working with the Government of Colombia (GoC) to foster green growth and reduce carbon emission within 4 key sectors; Energy, Transport, Agriculture and Forestry.
In support of Colombia’s goal to achieve zero net deforestation by 2020, GGGI has partnered with the Ministry of the Environment and Sustainable Development (MADS) to implement the Amazon Vision project. With the support of international donors, the project aims to develop and implement a financing mechanism and investment plan that will support reduced deforestation activities while enhancing development opportunities in Colombia’s Amazon region.
GGGI is also partnering with Colombia’s National Planning Department (DNP) to leverage the potential and further integrate green growth into the country’s broader economic planning. Through the Green Growth Plan project, GGGI and DNP are working to mainstream green growth into the development planning process, national growth and social indicators, and into prioritized Energy, Transport and Agricultural sectors. This project also aims to support the implementation of green growth targets and develop a long-term vision of Green Growth for the country.
