On May 16, in the City of Hermosillo, Mexico, GGGI and the State of Sonora signed a Memorandum of Understanding MoU to collaborate in the development of Sonora’s Green Growth Strategy. The MoU was signed by the State Governor, Mrs. Claudia Pavlovich, the Executive Commissioner of the Sonora Environmental and Sustainable Commission (CEDES), Mr. Carlos Romo, and GGGI’s Mexico Country Representative, Salvador Lopez.
The signing ceremony took place during the First Environmental Forum of the Sonora-Arizona Macro-region. During this event, the Governor officially announced the preparation of the Strategy which has been under development with the support of GGGI. The strategy received a positive reception by the ceremony attendants, which included members of the academia, the private sector, think‑tanks and government agencies of Sonora and Arizona.
By developing a State Green Growth Strategy, Sonora will become a leader among Mexican states in promoting the transition to green growth. The strategy establishes a vision under which “Sonora is a national leader in economic growth based on a green growth model, which promotes human development, quality of life and social inclusion, while improving resource productivity, environmental protection, and resilience to climate change”. The Strategy has the following five objectives:
- Economic competitiveness
- Human development, quality of life and equity
- Resource use productivity and environmental protection
- Decoupling of economic growth from fossil fuel consumption
- Climate change resilience
The State of Sonora also intends to create a Green Growth Cabinet to ensure the implementation of the Strategy and mainstream the concept of green growth in government operations. It will also strive to institutionalize green growth so that it is incorporated into the State Development Plans of future administrations.
