Ethiopia and GGGI enter green growth delivery phase

croppedSEOUL – March 08, 2016 – The Global Green Growth Institute today welcomed the Government of Ethiopia to discuss implementation of green growth action plans, and sign a Memorandum of Understanding that will help achieve development goals set by the Horn of Africa nation.

A government delegation led by Ethiopia’s Minister of Environment, Forestry and Climate Change, Dr. Shiferaw Teklemariam, met with GGGI’s Director-General and senior management team to review GGGI’s results and ongoing project activities in Ethiopia, and explore new green growth opportunities.

“As a founding member of GGGI, Ethiopia has a strong interest in collaborating closely with the organization and optimizing its activities in our country,” said Minister Teklemariam. “Today’s discussion was a great opportunity to further our partnership and build on the results we have achieved together.”

The challenge of accessing financing needed to meet Ethiopia’s Intended Nationally Determined Contributions for reductions in greenhouse gas emissions was a key point of discussion, with Ethiopia expressing the need to strengthen collaboration with GGGI on this issue.

“GGGI recognizes the barriers to mobilizing capital to where it will have the most impact, and is well positioned to support Ethiopia to access the type of financing required to implement their green growth plans,” said Yvo de Boer, Director-General, GGGI.

The meeting comes on the heels of Ethiopia validating a GGGI developed Country Planning Framework (CPF) that aligns green growth actions to the country’s Growth and Transformational Plan II, and Climate Resilient Green Economy Strategy.

The Memorandum of Understanding signed today will facilitate implementation of the CPF over the next 5 years, and leverage new green growth opportunities that support Ethiopia’s development targets.

GGGI has been supporting Ethiopia to develop strategic plans and prioritize economic sectors for green growth since 2010.
